Product Description

Product Description

This easy to set STV076 is a robust spring-loaded metal cage trap into which the squirrel enters, lured in by food. It is ideal for indoor and outdoor use. Near the back of the cage is a trip pan--when the squirrel steps on the pan, it triggers the trap door shut, and the animal is trapped inside, alive. Some other traps are made from different materials, such as solid-walled plastic or other materials. The STV076 squirrel cage trap is made from steel bars. This STV cage trap is large enough to hold the squirrel but isn’t too small. If it’s too small, the animal won't fit inside, or may trigger the trip pan, but not allow clearance for the door to shut all the way adding the squirrel’s escape. If it’s too large, the squirrel may run around and smash itself against the cage walls and hurt itself.

STV are the UK’s no.1 brand for effective control of rodent pests. Their comprehensive range includes catch-and-kill and live-catch traps, as well as rodenticide baits, bait stations and ultrasonic deterrents. The Big Cheese range is easy to use and features safety conscious application methods and welfare-friendly controls for caring control of pets and wildlife in outdoor areas, including small animals such as squirrels, moles, cats, deer and birds. The range includes sonic and chemical animal deterrents, live capture cage traps and decoy bird and animal predator species.

I had problems with squirrels in the house soffit and fascia. I also used 1/4 chunks of a snickers bar. It took a few days to catch the first one but after the first one the trap probably smelt of squirrel. Caught four so far (hopefully that is all).
The trap appears to be long enough so the tail is not trapped and is quite strong. Tip: if putting it on the roof, make sure it is tied to something (if I hadn't I don't think the squirrel or cage would survive the fall).

Although at first glance the Big Cheese looked small cheese it trapped my troublesome squirrels without causing them any injury, e.g. no trapped tail. It was unbelievably simple to use and trap the squirrels. I had fear of them bashing their way out of the cage when trapped, but the strong spring loaded door was always secure and held it's contents. I highly recommend this product, especially at the price of £16 including p&p, it's pound cheaper than any of its rivals. I trapped 6 squirrels, who had invaded my loft, within a 10 day period.

I decided to find something to remove squirrels from my garden after they caused endless damaged and wrecked by bird feeders. My garden was constantly plagued by them living close to a park and was a squirrel only zone as they let nothing else in. I have to give them credit for their persistence but I believe that these pests should not have complete rule and had already tried everything I knew to be rid of them but to no avail. Then I was told that I could legally trap and dispose of them as long as I did it in a humane way. So, I had a look at available products and found this one on Amazon. It had good reviews and the price was amazing compared to other products that went as high as £70! It was delivered next day and I found it so easy to set. Within an hour a few peanuts had lured the first squirrel and the trap worked. Within a few days I had captured each animal within an hour of it coming to the garden and then my garden was free. A couple of weeks later the odd new animal moved into the area but these were also captured successfully and now my garden is full of birds and the plants and parts of the house remain intact. One thing, each squirrel was obviously distressed as any animal would be on capture so a good idea to only set when you are at home which is what I do. I have had the trap for a few weeks now so cannot comment on whether or not it is still working after a year or so but there is nothing to suggest it won't be. The cage size is more than adequate and the mechanism works in a way that never causes the tail of the squirrel to become trapped. Overall, a great product that is huge value for money.

So each week you put out some food for the birds? And each year you plant lots of bulbs, hoping to see a garden full of flowers? And each week of each year along come the grey squirrels to eat all the bird food and dig up those bulbs, and maybe eat ruin your trees too. And then they go find all the birds nests and eat the eggs and baby birds. So now you've got a garden without birds or flowers: just nasty little American rats-with-tails nosing around? And you want to catch them but you can't? Because an air rifle seems a bit psycho and anyway your neighbours would get mad.

Well this gadget is for you. It's dead cheap, dead simple and it catches squirrels within minutes of being set. They're so dumb they just walk in and SNAP!

The only problem is - what next? It's illegal to let them go so you have to kill them, but in a humane way. Under the 2006 Animal Welfare Act, once an animal is under the responsibility of a human they have a duty not to cause unnecessary harm. `Pests' like the grey squirrel can be killed in a `humane way', such as a blow to the back of the head or shooting, but drowning or beating the animal to death is illegal. The RSPCA have actually prosecuted people for drowning them.

The Forestry Commission and other groups recommend decanting the animal into a sack before delivering a single blow to the head. An air rifle or shotgun can also be used as long as the user is properly qualified.

And you can't set a trap if you're not around to sort it out quickly because leaving them in the cage for hours is cruel too.

So if you're able to kill the squirrel humanely, or take it to a vet or pest control expert, then this is a great way of catching them first.

Works great. Took under a week to catch my first squirrel. First I used snickers as bait but no luck, so I just used plain peanuts, Two hrs later, Result!!! I've only needed to catch one more but I have my eyes on another. I found a pillow case and iron bar works for the kill. Remember its illegal to release squirrels and also unfair on the area you release them in.

A most excellent product. Very efficient. Delivered on a Monday and within 11 days ... 11 squirrels captured and dealt with! Peanuts work every time. I'm thinking of trying it on ordinary ground rats next. Wish me luck.
