I had the very last episode on tape for years after it was finally broadcast on Channel 4, but it was great to re-watch the whole of the final season now this DVD has been released.
One of the problems with Cheers was that it became such a massive hit first time round, that in its final few seasons, the show became very predictable, with the key characters always behaving just as we expected. It was great seeing them once a week, as if we as viewers were going down to Cheers for a few beers, but not to great if you watch them afterwards.
Fortunately, this final season was an improvement on the previous couple of seasons. The writers seem to be making an extra effort as they knew this was the final outing. But Frasier seems so different here to the character he became the following year- Kelsey Grammer always makes the most with what little material he is given, but apart from the episode when Lilith leaves him - an hilarious suicide storyline similar to one his agent Bebe Glazer does in Frasier a few years later - he has little to do this season, except bid a fond farewell in that classic final episode when Diane reappears.
I loved this season overall, there are several memorable episodes, and you realize about half way through, that the actors were bidding farewell to their soulmates after 11 years - particularly one jibe, when, either Cliff or Norm says 'Why turn the lead role in a part after all these years?' referencing Ted Danson's decision to quit the show, which hastened its eventual demise.
Wouldn't it be great to bring this one back again, with some new characters, and a couple of the oldtimers for notalgia's sake? I loved Cheers and this final season stands up really well, if not the best, then a great send off for this special piece of 80s and early 90s American TV.
