The definition of comfort television is this: you want to go where you know everybody's name. And you're always glad you came. Cheers is open for business once again in this set that contains all 22 episodes of the first, and best, season of the show that inherited Taxi's mantle as television's best ensemble-driven workplace comedy.

It can be instructive to return to a long-running series' more humble beginnings. While Cheers got drunk on farce in its later years, it began life as a much more grounded human comedy. In these inaugural episodes, the action does not stray from the Boston bar owned by Sam Malone, a washed-up baseball player three years sober. The straws that stir the drink are the supporting players: Nick Colasanto as addled Coach; Rhea Perlman, the Thelma Ritter of her generation, as surly and fertile waitress Carla; George Wendt as quintessential barfly Norm; and John Ratzenberger as Cliff, the bar know-it-all ready with "little-known facts" (and blessedly far from the pathetic blowhard his character would evolve into).

Spiking this concoction is the palpable chemistry between Ted Danson's Sam and Shelley Long's Diane Chambers, fledgling waitress and self-described "student of life". The battle lines are drawn in the episode "Sam's Women": He's the "dim ex-baseball player" and she, "the post graduate". But, as Carla so indelicately puts it, they can't "put their glands on hold". In the first blush of lust, they were primetime's most potent mismatched couple until Moonlighting's David and Maddie bantered double entendres. Here are little remembered facts: Sam was initially "an astute judge of human character"; guest stars Fred Dryer ("Sam at Eleven") and Julia Duffy ("Any Friend of Diane's") were among those considered for the roles of Sam and Diane; and a pre-"Night Court" Harry Anderson stole his scenes in his recurring role as flim-flam man Harry ("Pick a Con...Any Con"). --Donald Liebenson

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless 31 Aug 2005
Format:DVD
If, like me, you often look back to your childhood & teenage years thinking how much better music, movies & tv was back then, you probably snap up many of the re-released products in the hope that they're still as good as you remember. Quite often this can prove a huge dissapointment. Music, unless truly great, can sound very dated. Films, again unless your watching the classics, can now look very past-their-sell-by-date. TV Series unfortunately however usually prove to be most dissapointing. Programmes that you may have loved 15-20 years ago will more than likley look and sound terrible. Never mind the costumes, sound & picture quality, references and jokes often mean nothing as we're now living in a different world. There are very few tv comedy series that have stood the test of time ... Cheers is one of them.
Series 1 of the show following the goings-on in the Boston Bar where everybody knows your name is quite simply brilliant. We often forget that any long running series of any type has been granted numerous seasons because of how successful the first series was and watching this Box Set it's very easy to see just why this show was so popular.
The main characters are brilliantly crafted both in terms of who they are and how they are played. The setting is perfect and gives the writers endless opportunities to bring new characters in and out, whether that be for individual shows or entire series. There's an equal amount of warmth & sarcasm throughout each show which leaves the viewer smiling by the time the cosiest theme tune in television history ends & the Paramount logo pops up.

Great script, great characters, great delivery. This really is top-notch stuff and guarunteed to put a smile on your face. Another sure sign of its worth is that it's not really dated at all. Can't think of a comedy show that's bettered this since.
LOVE IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheers - Best Comedy Series Ever 29 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
After spending the last several years trying to update my collection of Cheers tapes, this DVD is like a breath of fresh air. Flawless acting combined with dialogues that stay fresh, incredibly funny and that at times bring tears to your eyes. No matter how many times you watch them. In the interview with Ted Danson in one of the extras at the end he says how lucky he feels because 'I got to play Sam Malone'. I imagine that each of the actors in Cheers would say the same about the character that they played. Tremendous, marvellous, unbeatable, timeless, hilarious. Waiting for the other series to become available with baited breath.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheers 16 Oct 2003
By DL Productions UK TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
Cheers has to be one of the longest running sitcoms in American history, and spawned Frasier's show. But in the 11 years it was showing, many actors and actresses were part of the great show; Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, John Ratzenberger, Kelsey Grammer and the grumpy bar owner Kirstie Alley. Here's an insight into the first series, aired back in 1982.
1 - Give Me a Ring Sometime
This is the pilot. Diane decides to work at Cheers after her Fiancée leaves her there while he gets his ex-wife's wedding ring.
2 - Sam's Woman
Diane teases Sam about the strange women he dates, sending him on a quest to find his perfect match.
3 - The Tortelli Tort
This is the first time we see Carla's firery temper, which nearly costs Sam the bar. Why? Because she attacks a rather rude Yankee's fan.
4 - Sam At Eleven
Sam feels nostalgia when a sports writer wants to interview him about his celebrity life as a sprtsman. This brings back great memories for Sam Malone.
5 - Coach's Daughter
There's a bit of a stair when Coach's daughter brings back an undesirable boyfriend and announces to Coach that she's going to get married to him. This doesn't please him at all.
6 - Any Friend of Diane's
Sam hits on one of Diane's old friends, who has consequently just bounced back from a bad affair.
7 - Friends, Romans, Accountants
Norm's trying to score points with the boss - he arranges an office party at Cheers, but arranges a rather unauthodox date with Diane.
8 - Truce or Consequences
Carla and Diane decided to let a matter drop about work drinks. But Carla has a confession to make about her younger child.
9 - Coach Returns to Action
Coach and Sam fall in love with Coach's new neighbour. Quite a funny episode.

Unlike most shows, Cheers hit the ground running. Most television shows take a couple of seasons to find the characters and discover what the show should be about. Seinfeld, Married with Children & Everybody Loves Raymond are all classic shows which had an average first season. For Cheers however the first season is one of the best.
For those unfamiliar with the show here is a summary of what it is about Sam Malone is a former baseball player for the Boston Redsox, He ruined his playing career due to his love of alcohol. He has since stopped drinking which is ironic seeing as how he owns a bar called Cheers (he bought it when he was an alcoholic) Diane Chambers is a snobby, witty and big-headed student who recently started work there as a waitress (she gets the job in the pilot). Diane and Sam both seem to dislike each other and have a relationship involving bickering and making fun of each others flaws, but is there a passion beneath the surface?
Then we have the other two people who work there, Coach and Carla. Two characters who are entire opposites. Coach is a charming, forgetful and somewhat dumb character while Carla is feisty and at times downright nasty. The brilliance of these two characters is that they both have flaws which could make you really dislike them but somehow you like them even more for it (I can not imagine anybody else playing Carla's character and still being likeable)
For this season there are only two regulars, Norm and Cliff. Cliff is a boring man who is obsessed with his job as a mailman. Norm is your typical barfly, always in the bar. These two characters are best friends and they provide much of the comic relief with their strange conversations.
