From Amazon.co.uk

Even as it bid goodbye to one of its core characters, Cheers enjoyed a fifth season of high hilarity that still holds up decades later. The cliffhanger at the end of the fourth season began a season-long courting dance between Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) in which both want to get married--but never at the same time. They argue, they see a pre-nuptial counselor (an Emmy-winning John Cleese), and then one has to make a final decision. But Sam and Diane weren't the only ones exploring relationships. Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) once again meets Dr. Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth) and, with the help of Diane, are soon cozily coinhabiting. Woody (Woody Harrelson) gets a visit from his ex-girlfriend (Amanda Wyss), and meets Coach's niece (Cady McClain). Carla (Rhea Perlman) seems finally rid of the sleazy Nick (Dan Hedaya, who was spun off into a thankfully short-lived series called The Tortellis) only to meet a Bruins goalie named Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas). Then again, there were some non-relationship events, such as Diane's trying out for the Boston Ballet and the gang's classic Thanksgiving dinner at Carla's house (in which we finally get to see Norm's wife, Vera, sort of). But more than anything, the fifth season belonged to Sam and Diane. Their relationship ends in touching flash-forward and a wish to "have a good life." If only the departing actor's subsequent career had been so good. --David Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, timeless comedy 23 May 2009

I used to watch Cheers sitting at home on my sofa when I was in my 20s. Now that I'm nearing 40, I fancied some nostalgia and ordered the box set.

Bliss.

Gentle comedy, very well written comedy that doesn't rely on swearing or plain nastiness (ok, excepting Carla) which has not dated at all. It's a joy to watch, and I'd rather see one episode of Cheers than ten hours of most of the modern crud that's on TV (possibly excepting Friends).

Buy it. You'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fond memories 7 Mar 2009

Great bargain from Amazon and delivered within two days of ordering - so the usual fantastic Amazon service.

As with seasons 1-4, season 5 of Cheers is a must buy! This is a fitting swansong to the highly intelligent and above all FUNNY comedy series of the wonderful will they/won't they chemistry between the two leads (Sam & Diane) amply aided and abetted by a great supporting cast. This is where Diane not only finally gets her man (hilarious and extremely romantic Chambers VS Malone episode) following her initial rejection of Sam's proposal but where she leaves him for good (heartbreakingly poignant, I Do, Adieu. I recommend having tissues at the ready!). Stand out episodes include The Proposal, Abnormal Psychology, Young Dr Weinstein, Thanksgiving Orphans, Chambers VS Malone... actually apart from one or two (Never Love a Goalie parts 1&2), they are all standout episodes! I really think Shelley Long (Diane) left far too prematurely. Up to season 5, Sam as a character was just becoming fully developed, i.e. Sam was beginning to question his batchelor status, his ageing, his mortality - similarly with Diane (broken dreams, unattainable life goals). When Diane leaves, Sam reverts to being so one-dimensional in subsequent serieses that the only good thing to emerge from Cheers Seasons 6 onwards was the Lillith and Frasier chemistry!

Cheers is a rare breed amongst tv shows in that watching it 20+ years after it's original release, it remains as fresh as ever. Brilliant writing, supremely acted & avoiding much use of "current-affairs" jokes or plots are key reasons why you can still watch an episode now and not cringe. Costumes aside - Cheers really retains it's vintage.

Series 1 through to 4 are generally brilliant. There may be one or two slight lulls with the inclusion of one or two weaker episodes but the standard is impeccable. Series 5 does unfortunately dip slightly although it's still great stuff. Watcing this full series in 2008 I couldn't help thinking that Shelly Long's departure was a sad but welcome change to the show. The spark had gone from the Sam + Diane romance and it was time for a change. Diane had been a superb member of the Cheers team but it's clear that things would be just fine with Sam, Woody, Cliff & Norm all still holding court. The final episode was touching without being saccharin sweet, typical Cheers, superbly crafted.

Overall Series 5 of Cheers remains hilarious tv with a heart. The only reason I award it 4 Stars instead of 5 is that relative to the previous 5 seasons it's not quite as consistently enjoyable.

Overall I was very happy with the item. The Cheers crews as always are very funny. This is of course a matter of taste but as I had viewed them from the start perhaps I am biased. Read more

Wonderful Cheers Season, with true laughs. It's truly restoring to finish off the evening with an episode. And the characters are brilliant consistently.

Cheers is one of the best comedy series of all time. This is the last series with the character Diane, which became a turning point in the series - it got even better after this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another batch of laughs.
Adding to the collection. The laughs are OK, the plot a little thin as ideas are running out. The 'on-location' items are very staged in an attempt to add a little spice. Read more
