It had been a couple of decades since i had seen any of the Cheech and Chong movies; i hadnt a lasting impression that they were "must have movies", but they were part of my teenage years and at this very reasonable price i opted for the double dvd; i half hoped that "still smokin" was not their European movie; not because i remember it being bad, but that it didnt really work.
OK i settled in for a Cheech and Chong fest; it had been a crappy couple of days and it was just what i thought would be the tonic i needed; first "up in smoke"; i have to say that this movie has aged quite well; it was well put together, well directed, the music was great; the pacing is good, and the humour, though perhaps not everyones cup-of-tea, works admirably; Stacey Keach was brilliantly cast as the uptight narcotics officer, and most of the other supporting roles are well played; in short "up in smoke" is a classic ;i feel 5 stars is being a little too generous, and 4 not quite enough so lets settle for 4.5, and move on to what i hoped would be the dessert after the main course; regretably "Still smokin" IS the european movie, and oh brother, it is attrocious; its quite obvious that the success of "up in smoke" had gone completely to their heads and they felt they could do no wrong; i was clearly witnessing two individuals utterly convinced they were being too hilarious for words, and this embarrassingly lame comedy coupled with snippets of classical and even less appropriate, 1980s music is so poor in its entirety, i strongly advise you to settle for "up in smoke", and maybe have "born in east LA" for dessert (although it has been what could easily be 20 years since i have seen that also).
