Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

An army of White Chessmen has invaded Chess City and captured the Black King and Queen...but the reader can help the Black Chessmen rescue them by solving a series of puzzles, each of which is based on the move of a chess piece.

Checkmate at Chess City is an ingenious book that cleverly combines teaching the young reader to play chess, piece by piece and move by move, with a cracking interactive adventure story that gathers pace as the game goes on.

Ideal for anyone wanting to master the art of the game--no matter how young or old--Checkmate at Chess City is an unusual and innovative picture book that captures the imagination while teaching a classic game. (Age 6 and over) --Susan Harrison --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The book is a series of "mazes" - each page features a different piece which can move through the maze according to its chess move, avoiding various pitfalls. My 6 year old son loves this book - he picked up the idea easily, even though he as yet has no idea about actual chess. I enjoyed helping him with it (we ended up fighting over it) as there is enough detail so an adult has to concentrate too. My only moan about it is the lack of solutions, good in one way because my son is an inveterate cheater, but frustrating when I can't solve the puzzle either!

I am five years old and I wanted to learn to play chess. Checkmate at Chess City is fantastic. I have learnt about bishops and knights and pawns and all the other pieces and how they move.

I don't really know about checkmate yet but I have started playing chess and I really enjoy it. The book is quite tricky at times - when we are nearly finished sometimes we get stuck. But I have completely finished some pages and it is good fun.

The book is a great way for kids to learn how the different chess pieces move in a fun way. Some of the "puzzles" are tricky for young kids but still fun for them to do
