5.0 out of 5 stars A superb culmination to the best ever historical faction., 24 Oct 2000
By A Customer
The Lymond chroncilcle, starting with "Game of Kings" and culminating with "Checkmate" is compulsive reading. Set during the lifetime of Mary Queen of Scots, the action ranges from Scotland, France, Malta, Istambul, Russia and finally back to Scotland. A mixture of fictional and real characters come alive on the pages. The central character, Francis Crawford of Lymond, is one of the most charismatic characters in any book I have ever read. His colleagues and enemies are equally realistically drawn, and equally compulsive. These books encouraged me to find out more about the times and places they tell of. I cannot count how many times I have read them and must have driven the publishers mad with calls to find out when "Checkmate" would appear. It took years and the tension was almost unbearable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best historical fiction book ever written!, 2 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Please read the Lymond Chronicles in order: GAME OF KINGS, QUEENS' PLAY, DISORDERLY KNIGHTS, PAWN IN FRANKINCENSE, RINGED CASTLE and CHECKMATE. I have no words to describe the series, let alone this book. Read them and become obsessed for life. You'll want to travel to the places Dunnett describes, read up on background history, and ultimately fall in love with Lymond.
The House of Niccolo series is also very good and well worth obsessing over as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Francis Crawford - James Bond, Osama bin Laden and John Donne rolled into one, 27 Sep 2006

(REAL NAME)
I read Game of Kings first in 1985 having picked it up by chance. By the time I was nearing the end of it, I was frantically scrabbling round London bookshops looking for the next one - and so on through the series. If you can get into the first book, through the difficult language, complicated goings-on, and work out who is who, you will be hooked good and proper.

The best birthday present I ever had was a complete set of the hardbacks, given to me by a friend who found them second-hand for sale in her local library! I have just finished the OU year, and held out a reread to myself as an end of study treat, and I've fallen in love with the business all over again.

Dunnett writes like nobody else; but if you can imagine the richness of Gabriel Garcia Marquez mixed with a modern James Bond film and topped off with the erudition of Simon Schama, you're getting somewhere. Read them.
