Amazon.co.uk Review

An army of White Chessmen has invaded Chess City and captured the Black King and Queen...but the reader can help the Black Chessmen rescue them by solving a series of puzzles, each of which is based on the move of a chess piece.

Checkmate at Chess City is an ingenious book that cleverly combines teaching the young reader to play chess, piece by piece and move by move, with a cracking interactive adventure story that gathers pace as the game goes on.

Ideal for anyone wanting to master the art of the game--no matter how young or old--Checkmate at Chess City is an unusual and innovative picture book that captures the imagination while teaching a classic game. (Age 6 and over) --Susan Harrison --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun even for non-chess players, 16 April 2001
By A Customer
The book is a series of "mazes" - each page features a different piece which can move through the maze according to its chess move, avoiding various pitfalls. My 6 year old son loves this book - he picked up the idea easily, even though he as yet has no idea about actual chess. I enjoyed helping him with it (we ended up fighting over it) as there is enough detail so an adult has to concentrate too. My only moan about it is the lack of solutions, good in one way because my son is an inveterate cheater, but frustrating when I can't solve the puzzle either!

5.0 out of 5 stars I learnt to play chess, 2 Feb 2003
This review is from: Checkmate at Chess City (Hardcover)
I am five years old and I wanted to learn to play chess. Checkmate at Chess City is fantastic. I have learnt about bishops and knights and pawns and all the other pieces and how they move.

I don't really know about checkmate yet but I have started playing chess and I really enjoy it. The book is quite tricky at times - when we are nearly finished sometimes we get stuck. But I have completely finished some pages and it is good fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for kids, 27 Mar 2002
By Richard Dawson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Checkmate at Chess City (Us) (Hardcover)
I teach chess at a local library and I've found this book to be an excellent resource. The library where I teach currently has four copies and these books are always checked out. I've found chess puzzles to be a good way to convey chess concepts to young players and this book uses chess puzzles in a creative way to teach young players how to move pawns and pieces correctly. The format reminds me of a Richard Scarry or a Where's Waldo book. Children have a lot of fun looking at little details on every page, just like looking for "Gold Bug" or Waldo. This book engages childrens' attention while introducing the basics of pawn and piece movement. It's a fun book for children and it accomplishes its purpose wonderfully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid and Wonderful (Especially for K-3rd grade), 19 Oct 2001

I cannot say enough about how wonder this book is for the K-3rd grade kids in my Chess Club! They are learning the moves of all pieces.
The book may not be thick, but it is LONG in the hours of FASCINATION that it generates in kids. It is like a story book about a Chess King and Queen that need to be rescued from captivity out of the dungeon of a Castle surrounded by deserts, swamps, and other challenging areas through which the kids must navigate the other chess pieces. The kids do not even realize that they are learning how to move real chess pieces! I am asking all parents of my Chess Club members to get this book for their child. I love to read it myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great puzzler book!, 23 May 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Checkmate at Chess City (Us) (Hardcover)
Despite the fact that our 6-year-old already knows how to play chess, he loved this book! Every page is filled with detailed pictures and game boards -- it is entertaining just to look at everything that's "going on"! The theme of the book is actually a puzzle or a maze based on the movements the chess board pieces are permitted to make in the real game. The book helps children understand the game, or, if they already know how to play, helps them practice on their own. Not all of the puzzles are easy, either!
