An amazingly eclectic collection of tunes that range from punk, hip hop, jazz and everything else thats good with music. It may sound like a mess at first, but with a few listens it becomes apparent how good an album this is. There is something for everybody, and its one of the few COMPLETELY original albums that you will ever hear. It's as funky as hell, yet it rocks like a violent beast. I have no idea what the Beasties were on when they created this masterpiece BUT I WANT SOME!!!!!!

God, this CD is awesome. The first time I heard it, I thought it was awful. Then I heard "So What'cha Want" on a stereo in Camden Market three years later, and the full genius of 'Check Your Head' became apparent.
"Gratitude", "Time for Livin'" and "So What'cha Want" just totally rock, 100% full of punk attitude, while "Pow", "In 3's" and "Namasté" (which all made it onto the later chill-out BB bits-and-pieces album "The In Sound From Way Out") show how competent these guys had become, even in 1992.
Which isn't to say "Paul's Boutique", "Ill Communication" or "Hello Nasty" are lesser works - they're extremely accomplished too.

Let me put it simply: THIS IS THE BEST RECORD THE BEASTIES HAVE EVER DONE.
Unbeatable, unforgettable, unputdownable!
This is the bomb, buy this album right now and forever live knowing you bought one of the greatest albums of all time.
From the opening 'Jimmy James' (dedicated to Hendrix) to the closing mysterious and inventive 'Namasté', this album is a masterpiece.
The best tracks undoubtably are 'So What'cha Want', 'Gratitude' and 'Something's Got to Give', but all the songs are top notch.
I love the way the cover has the boys doing the See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil thing. Its the coolest album cover I've ever seen.
'So What'cha Want' is my second favourite Beastie Boys song (just behind 'Intergalactic'). Buy this album now.
P.S. Please visit [...] for some great music. Keep rockin with the sure shot yall!

Released back in 1992 this was the Beasties third album proper and showed a slight change in direction for the Brooklyn Trio. From the opening 'Jimmy James' this album just screams of coolness and like all their albums has stood the test of time remarkably well. Funk filled tracks such as 'Funky Boss' and 'In 3's' showed a more mature change of direction from their beer swilling, naked go go dancer days of the 80's. There's also the fantastic 'Time for livin' a storming thrash punk track, they would repeat this formula both on the 'Ill Communication' and 'Aglio E Olio' EP. But by far the standout track of this album is the amazing 'Gratitude' with the most amazing fuzz bass ever. The Beasties are always considered as the most cool and well respected bands around at the moment, in fact it's them them along with Run DMC who are considered as the main influence of the 'Nu Metal' mixture of Rock and Hip-Hop. This cd is an absolute MUST for any respectible record collection and will increase your coolness by at least a million!

This album has everything in it punk, jazz, lounge music done cool with a hip-hop sensibility. Some of it is very witty, even just musically. A smorgasbord of creativity. Great fun - buy it.

everyone raves about the debut of these cheeky chaps but the true beastie gems are "check you head" and "ill communication".

this album is top of the drawer.

i love the way they get the old school sound by recording the album live.

the sound of the congas really rocks out. the tops tracks are definatly:

1: so whatcha want?
2: stand together
3: professor booty
