Biography

Richard Ashcroft is the essence of Brit Cool. Like Syd Barrett or Nick Drake before him, Pete Doherty and Alex Turner after him, Ashcroft is one of those rarified rock eccentrics; the type of visionary spirit that’s one of England’s greatest musical exports. As the frontman of The Verve, Ashcroft was the signature voice of 1990s English pop music. The band’s global megahit ... Read more in Amazon's Richard Ashcroft Store

Check The Meaning, Ashcroft's first single of his seccond solo album "Human Conditions", might need a certain time to get listened into, but after that certain time you realise the beauty of this track.
Great guitar riff. Chilly bass lines and double-recorded vocals,
high and low. You'll especially prefer the perfect cut edit compared to the slight overlength of the album track.
Aside that, there is one of the best b-sides Ashcroft's ever written: The Miracle (It's gonna be a long, long road, gonna be a million paths to sow, gonna be trouble on the way, gonna get your fair share of the pain, but there's gonna be laughter and joy..." even catchier than the single itself. Sounds very souly,
a rthythmn that'll get your butts shaking.
This track is lacking on the album!!
"The Chris Potter Remix" is a very well-done alternative and
gets even more into the "lounge"-direction. Very nice. Very good. Keep up Work Rich.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall Impression 6 July 2003
Format:Audio CD
'Check The Meaning' is a soulful, thoughtful, invigorating and easy-listening track that is easy to unwind to. It can take you on a 'journey' fom beginning to end and leave you with a different perspective on things at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expansive 30 July 2008
By Derrick Johnson VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Using strings & a Sitar might not be the most conventional instruments, particularly in a Rock song, but Richard Ashcroft makes great use of it on the debut release on his 2002 CD Human Conditions . Whilst the CD in question didn't do much for me, this single did (and still does) over a swirling soundtrack, Mr. Ashcroft questions life, religion, and all things in-between. Solid
