Product Description

Product Description

Respected singer/songwriter at the top of her game delivers eclectic set of contemporary alt folk-country - with punchy takes on infidelity, debt, death and desire Charlie's new album,'Cheapskate Lullabyes'. Her seventh album and first set of originals since 2006, is an eclectic collection of genre-defying musical styles which she describes as 'borrowed from folk, country, Django Reinhardt and the Beatles'. Lyrically, the subject matter ranges from infidelity ('His Wife') to debt ('Cheapskate Lullabye'), via drink ('A Man Walks Into A Bar'),death ('Australia') desire ('Liontamer'), therapy ('Fifty Pound Father') and difficult step-children ('Milk Teeth'). Co-produced & written with long-time collaborator and school friend Julian Littman, the album features her live band, The Hula Valley Orchestra. The 4 piece current line-up are all multi-instrumental and despite the name don't feature Hawaiian music or come from a valley. The band will be appearing at festivals throughout summer '11 including Cropredy, Cornbury and Ireby. Although best known as one of the UK's most respected singer-songwriters, Charlie enjoys a multi-faceted career that includes acting in film, TV & radio, comedy-improvisation, and composition for film and TV. May '11 sees the airing of 'Sybil Law', her first radio comedy series, written for BBC Radio Scotland and starring Una Maclean. Her enduring radio classic, 'Pilot of the Airwaves' was the first of many successful songs that lead the way for an impressively diverse list of artists to record her material, including Tina Turner, George Harrison,Lisa Stansfield,Paul Carrack,Ricky Ross,Sheena Easton(US No 4),Celine Dion, UB40 and Jimmy Nail, for whom she wrote "Ain't No Doubt", a UK No 1. ‘File under treasure’ – Charlie Gillett, Observer Music Magazine ‘A clever songwriter with a dream of a voice that glides from folk and country to jazzy cabaret’ – The Telegraph ‘She sounds like Albion’s lost McGarrigle sister’ – Uncut ‘The surety of Dore’s singing helps highlight the elegance and candour of her songs’ The Observer Also available; BICD2 'Sleep All Day and Other Stories', BICD3 'Cuckoo Hill' BICD5 The Hula Valley Songbook Tour dates 27th May - Ireby Festival, Cumbria 14th June - Wargrave Festival, Berkshire 15th June - The Slaughtered Lamb, London 25th June - Glastonbury 26th June - Dent Music & Beer Festival, Cumbria 2nd July - Cornbury Festival, Oxfordshire 24th July - Summertyne Festival, The Sage, Gateshead 12th August - Fairport's Cropredy Convention, Oxon

"File this one under,'gem'!"
-- Irish World

"Knowing, worldly, delicate, but mordant pop born out of wisdom, mostly and the desire to share it.....the sound is sophisticated acoustic chamber pop with vintage-jazzy overtones."

I'm not sure anyone makes a record quite like Charlie Dore does in this modern age. Each one of her offerings is more a labour of love than a wish for commercial aspirations. Her own musical style is as eclectic as the artists who have cut her songs like Tina Turner, Celina Dion, Lisa Stansfield, Hayley Westernra and Status Quo. Charlie is therefore hard to classify but if a record store had a section named "class" that's where CHEAPSKATE LULLABYES, her seventh album, released of her own label Black Ink Music, would be found.

This project marks her first collection of originals songs since the delightful 2006 album CUCKOO HILL. Dore has one solo cut and the remaining nine songs are composed with her long-time musical partner Julian Littman who as a multi-instrumentalist adds guitars, lap steel, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, drums, piano and backing vocals. Together they co-produce all the tracks.

If you were to pick at random from a quality box of chocolates and allow each one to very slowly melt in your mouth and savour the rich flavours then much the same can be said for this album. It demands several plays to allow the individual nuances to both surprise and be appreciated.

The CD, complete with a 16 page booklet with live photos and lyrics has a cover which has a creased and dog-eared finish like a well thumbed paperback book. The artwork is an etching by Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 - May 15, 1967). Called "East Side Interior" (1922), a woman sits alone at a sowing machine with a baby carriage at her side. She's lost in her own thoughts but something outside the window attracts her attention and stirs her imagination. In a similar way the life of a songwriter follows that same path and the textures that are created on this musical canvas are indeed art.

I have been a fan of Charlie since I discovered that she wrote and performed the original 'Refuse to Dance' that Celine Dion covered on her 'The Colour of My Love' album. 'Things Change' featured Charlie's version. This album along with 'Where To Now' and 'Listen' are good listening, but since 'Sleep All Day' Charlie just keeps getting better and better. 'Cuckoo Hill' = perfection. 'Hula Valley' = quaint. 'Cheapskate Lullabyes' = the best yet - superb! Please keep releasing material like this Charlie! Well Done! Highly recommended!

Such a writer and singer should get much more recognition, unlike those hopeless cases on X factor and the like. This lady can write and sing a story that can melt your heart or make you dance with the joy of life. A future classic!!
