This film is a detective spoof that attempts to mix characters and stories form films such as Casa Blanca, and “The Maltese Falcon”. All the characters are played by well known actors. Some of the actors could have challenged the originals.
One line I will have to use by Lou Peckinpaugh to the cab driver, “No tip, I’m a war veteran.”
This formula worked better in “Murder by Death” (1976); however they tried too hard and missed the target. The puns and site gags were old hat or targeted to too small an audience. The train of thought could not focus long enough to be funny. If you really line detective farces with well known actors you may want to watch “Clue” (1985).

I am surprised that there is not more complimentary reviews for this movie. To put it briefly, any genuine movie fan with a particular love of Warner Bros films of the forties, will love it. Aficionados of 'Casablanca', 'The Maltese Falcon' and 'To Have And To Have Not' will be amazed how clever the comedy dialogue is, but after viewing this I doubt that they will ever treat those three great films seriously again.

stellar cast, witty script and so many parodies of old classic film noirs you can play along at home and add them up!for me madeline khan and eileen brennan (playing chanteuse betty la boop)are just two of the highlites in this very funny movie.neil simons plays can be a bit hit and miss when put on a screen but this is my favourite.highly recommended

Amateurs of 2nd degree humour, throw yourselves on this classic of classics. I was told to get it after I watched "Murder by Death" (where I almost died laughing), well this is to be classed in the same category.

It's always a good laugh when people have a good sense of auto-derision. Well Peter Falk plays the role to perfection! And the rest of the cast is real world-class.
