Review

This book deserves a place on the shelves of all food lovers. It gives an insight into the ethos of Chatsworth, together with its extraordinary food empire, as well as being an excellent cookery book and a delight to read (Country Life )

Contains the Duchess's favourite recipes and wry anecdotes: 'I once had a very bad-tempered Light Sussex cock which flew at people claws first and made a nasty mess of their legs. My father wrung his neck and he was sent in a jelly (the cock, not my father) to an ill person.' Eat your heart out, Nigella. (World of Interiors )

Possibly the poshest food book ever. (Lady )

Eat like a Duchess and get to know more about one of England's great houses and the family who live there. (Nottinghamshire Evening Post )

Product Description

Eat like a Duchess and get to know more about one of England's great houses and the family who live there.

Although she is the first to admit that she herself hasn't cooked for half a century, Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire is deeply interested in good food. Chatsworth is renowned for its superb farm shop, its brilliant catering and by those lucky enough to have sampled it – the delectable product of this private kitchen.

In this book, the Duchess has collected the recipes for dishes that she loves. They range from simple soups and suppers to sumptuous dinner, and include brunches and breads and some of the cakes, jams and marmalades that sell so successfully under the Duchess of Devonshire's own label.

Each section – and many of the recipes – comes with a personal introduction from the Duchess in which she mixes history, observation and wit in the style that has gained her such a devoted following.

Many of the recipes in this book are quite daunting and indeed I do not see myself tackling most of them or will confine myself to more simple versions. Despite the shortcomings I mentioned earlier, I love this book mostly for Debo's witty prose, reminiscences of growing up as one of the Mitford sisters, later being Duchess of Devonshire and the phenomenon of what is today one of the UK's favourite stately homes- all written with food as a unifying theme.

In this book; Debo shares recipes from her mother, sisters, friends and chefs who work in Chatsworth as well as her and her husband's favourites. Having made some of the dishes in this book, my experience is they do work, especially the puddings.

I recommend this to anyone who loves history and puddings!

Extra-ordinarily good read. Although unlikely you will tackle all the recipes, they nonetheless make extremely diverting reading. Practical, no nonsense, and very witty. What more could you ask of a book?
