Product Description

Size Name: Case of 6

If you've ever wished you'd bought great vintage Cru Bourgeois claret years ago so you could enjoy it now, at perfect maturity, and congratulate yourself on its outstanding value vis à vis current vintages, Château Ramage la Batisse Haut-Médoc 2003 is a godsend.

From Bordeaux himself, our Buyer Jean Marc has many friends in the region and was contacted by one about this 2003. The family had held onto the wine, but now needed space in the cellar, so were offering it at a great price.

With an amazing 10 medals to its name and its ripe, rounded harmony of flavours, the wine was a must have. All cedar wood, cassis and liquorice complexity, this is classic Haut Médoc. Stand the bottle upright a few hours, then decant before serving with lamb.

The medals won are as follows:

- GOLD Medal at the 2006 Concours des Grands Vins de France

-GOLD Medal at the 2007 Korea Wine Challenge

-GOLD Medal at the 2008 Vinalies (China)

-SILVER Medal at the 2006 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles

-SILVER Medal at the 2006 Austrian International Wine Challenge - Vienna

-SILVER Medal at the 2006 Mundus Vini International Wine Competition (Germany)

-SILVER Medal at the 2011 Concours des Meilleurs Vins Francais en Asie (Hong Kong)

-SILVER Medal at the 2009 Selections Mondiales Des Vins De Canada

-BRONZE Medal at the 2011 Cathay Pacific International Wine and Spirit Competition (Hong Kong)

-BRONZE Medal at the 2011 Wine Style Asia Awards (Hong Kong)

And in the press:

-87pts in Wine Spectator (USA) in 03,

-Recommendation and 3 Stars in Decanter Magazine (UK) in 06

This was obviously a very nice claret at its peak, but the bottle we had was definitely past its best in December 2014. There were still hints of deep and complex flavours, but they were faded and were all overlaid with those notes of stale sherry and a rather poor finish which you sometimes get when a wine is getting tired. Others have obviously had bottles which are still excellent, but treat with caution - it's a lot to spend (well, it is for me) on a bottle which might be too old to enjoy at its best.

(It is worth saying, though, that Laithwaites will refund you in full if you don't like any wine. They are always very courteous and helpful about it, so you'd be safe in that knowledge of you wanted to risk it.)

I bought this as a treat to myself and was most unhappy to find the cork mouldy and the wine tasting and smelling of dirt. I contacted amazon who have given me a full refund for the product. Once again great service from amazon.

Now I'm no wine expert (and nor do I pretend to be), but I do know when I like a bottle! This bottle was rather nice - smooth and mellow. I got this at half price in one of the lightening deals and as much as I think it's a lovely bottle of wine I would not consider paying full price for it (maybe I'm just a bit tight) and so hence only 4 stars.

Good wine if you leave it to breath for a couple of hours and decant but I would judge the wine at about £9 per bottle not £26.

I have tried this wine from Laithwaites and thought it was really lovely...very smooth. Make sure you decant it though.
