Disappointment,
By
This review is from: Chasseur Cast Iron Smooth Base Square Grill Pan with Wood Handle (Kitchen & Home)
I was looking for a good quality cast iron grill pan with a wooden handle, as having an iron handle is quite dangerous in the long run. This pan caught my attention, the price was right (actually even lower than I was willing to spend) but everything fit the bill - flat surface (very important as my stove is ceramic-glass), the cast iron surface is covered with enamel (I can't be bothered to think about aging and caring about material all the time), hand-made in France, what's not to like. So, I ordered it and although I picked the cheapest delivery method it was sent with UPS overnight for no extra cost. The pan arrived the next afternoon and I promptly unpacked it. At first glance, it looked great. However, after exploring the surface close-up, I found a large number of dents, scratches, etc. along the whole pan. That would've been sort of OK if it weren't covered with enamel but I was thinking the enamel should've smoothed out all these dents. Anyways, on the bottom (the touted 'flat surface') there were two very sharp pointy bumps, that would've surely scratched my stoves if I were to move the pan even slightly without lifting it up. Not sure if the bumps were the enamel or the iron itself, but they were sharp! I thought for a second to maybe smooth them up with a file (I am much more forgiving then my wife) but the moment she saw it, she said that goes back to where it came from. I was still unsure, I thought the bumps might be dealt with and to show her it won't make a scratch I carefully placed the pan on the stove... So, there we found out the biggest flaw of the pan - it was warped, or twisted, not so slightly, perhaps the wobble was more than half centimeter. I can somehow live with a wobbly pan if it gave me a good service for 5-6 years or more - not with a brand new, hand-made in France pan. So it was returned the next morning for a refund. Perhaps it was just this one pan that had all these problems but I personally wouldn't buy this brand again unless I personally inspect it in a store first. I checked (and bought) another grill pan in a store few days later and of all the pans I looked at, I didn't see any of the dents, bumps and scratches this one had, so I don't know what to think of it. I am giving a two star just because I feel 1 star is reserved for really appalling products which this one wasn't, despite the poor make.

Great grill pan,
This review is from: Chasseur Cast Iron Smooth Base Square Grill Pan with Wood Handle (Kitchen & Home)
This was my first time buying a cast iron grill pan, so didn't really know what to expect.
The product arrived in perfect condition. It is very well made, does the job nicely. Relatively easy to clean once you figure out the best way, mine is while it's still hot with very hot running water. I usually grill vegetables and I found that it fits quite a lot, around 6 courgette lengthwise slices. Overall very happy with my purchase.

A real Man-Pan.,

At last the boffins at Chasseur HQ have realised that the old design of this pan needed changing and have made steps in the right direction.
Ok, so it still weighs a tonne but you'll never get around that with cast iron cookware, therefore if your wrists/arms aren't strong I'd advise you to look elsewhere. No, the major improvement has come in the redesign of the handle, so gone is the bare enameled handle of yesteryear and in its place is a svelte maple wood handle that at least won't 'cattle brand' your hand, when the the pan is being used on the hob. This is the one thing that let the old design down for me, so I will offload my old one at a carboot sale and buy this instead. The trade off is that you cannot put it in the dishwasher but that's not a major problem as I have always found that handwashing this is best, as the dishwasher never seems to get it clean and is too corrosive on the grilling surface. As an added protection I always lightly wipe the pan over with vegetable oil when it's being stored, to stop any light surface corrosion that oft appears.
