A beautiful book about opposites attract, 18 Sep 2008
Ok, let's sum this up: I just adore this book, I love all Deirdre Martin has published and this work especially. IMO it's perfect in every way and a brilliant new book in the "New York Blades" series.
For those who want some more info, here it is.
It's all about Delilah Gould, a very shy dog trainer, and about Jason Mitchell, a new player of the Blades. Jason and his best buddy, Newfoundland Stanley, are new in town and in need of a place for Stanley to stay when Jason is playing. Jason and Delilah meet on a hot summer day and there is instant attraction between them and even better Delilah adores Stanley and is prepared to train and board him.
From a working relationship they go on to a more intimate one and at the beginning they have a lot of fun and enjoy their life together, but soon realize that because their temperaments are totally different not everything is perfect. Delilah is very shy and happy to stay at home with her dogs while Jason wants to enjoy every aspect of his new life in New York and wants to spend every night out meeting new people.
Jason expects Delilah to be more outgoing but doesn't realize that he is hurting her more than helping to overcome her insecurities.
After a disastrous evening spent at one of Jason's colleagues home they both decide to end their intimate relationship. They still have contact because of Stanley and after Delilah helps Jason out in two critical situations he realizes why he fell in love with the shy Delilah and that they are perfect for each other if they accept the other just like she/he is.
Delilah and Jason are really sweet together and I especially love her. She is one of my favourite heroines.
Besides Delilah, Jason and Stanley you also meet some crazy parents, an annoying but also very charming twin-brother (his book "Power Play" is out in October 08) and some of the "old" Blades and each of them makes this book what it is: perfect.
So please run to your next bookstore/go online and buy/order yourself a copy and read on!
Enjoy.
S.M.

a good book, but..., 23 Feb 2007
To tell the truth I bought the book mainly for the dog part, so here it is. It features Delilah Gould, a dolg walker/trainer and the new Blades star Jason Mitchell, who moves into he city along with his newfoundlander called Stanley. Stanley is not exactly a well trained dog and and Delilah meets Jason when Stanley misbehaves duing their walk. She agrees to train him and walk him whenever Jason is out of town. They keep meeting because Stanley and soon start dating.
I like both Delilah and Jason, but I can't see them together, they are just too different. Delilah is good with dogs and all in all a good person, but she prefers the company of dogs than of humans. Jason is a nice guy, not too cocky for a professional athlete and of course he loves Stanley. But I just can't condone the way he treats Delilah a couple of times. Since he is busy with the games and she has to keep the business running by walking dogs they spend a lot of time together adjusting their timetables. He gets all sulky when she says she hasn'nt got time because she has dogs to walk. When they do get together and go out with his teammates she gets tonguetied and awkward, he is not very understanding and actually berates her for her shyness. Jason takes it out on her after he has a bad day, she lets him get of with him way to easily. At the end of the book I realised that they spend more time arguing than enoying eachothers company.
And don't get me started on the dog part of the book. I own a dog and spend a lot of time in the park with other owners. I don't know if they make dogs different in America, but I just can't imagine a professional dog walker take several dogs out at the same time, like Delilah does. I actually know a walker and she would never think of doing that. No matter how well trained the dogs are they would be impossible to control. Not to mention that some dogs simply don't get along and sooner or later can start to fight. Delilah also boards the dogs in her apartment overnight and at one time she actually has 8 dogs spending the night and did she has three dogs of her own, I just can't believe that. Many times I thouht to myself yeah right that would never happen. Like I said either they make dogs different in America or Ms Martin simply doesnsn't know much about dogs. And since she has Jason wondering how on earth can Stanley know that its him ringing the front door bell, I am inclined to go with the second option.
All in all I quite like the book if i disregard the dog part and concentrate on the parts when Jason and Delilah get along. He does after all help her out by walking the dogs instead of her. If you don't care for the dog part and don't mind the couple arguing its a good book.

A Real Treat, 7 April 2008
This is such a lovely story about Delilah and Jason. The characters that the author writes about are so well developed that you end up caring what happens to all of them. I'm really hoping that Deirdre Martin writes a book about Jason's twin brother Eric next. If you love dogs, hockey and a well thought out romantic story with lots of twists and turns then make sure you pick this one up as you will definitely not regret it.
