5.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Lord Mystery 4 Sept. 2014

I may have read this once before. Either way I enjoyed it. Lord Northcourt had made a pact with his Oxford friends not to marry because of their shock when the wife of another of their group killed her husband because she caught him with his mistress. She hit him with a poker. While it sounded like justified homicide to me, they put her in jail and it was figured that she would hang. In the Recency period many marriages were ones of convenience rather than love so mistresses were common. However some discretion was expected. They agreed that they didn't always approve of him and he was certainly not discrete but still it shook them so much they didn't plan to marry. Each man's story is interesting.

Lady Miriam, an Earl' s daughter (Lord Northciurt was an Earl) had met him at her first dance. Her mother's friend introduced him to her son and suggested he dance with her and he refused and left to play cards. She was mortified and felt her hopes for the season ended when she had been cut so. Then the man with the bounder asked her to dance and she thought how kind he was. He saved her and she would not be cut by everyone.. She formed a tendre for him and thought he would come and ask for her hand, sort of like Cinderella over one dance. She never saw him again. A few years later her grandfather ordered the girls to come to his home and he had men picked out for them to marry. She write a letter to Lord Mystery as her mother called him asking that he rescue her and come ask for her hand now. Then she left it on the dresser. When she went back to destroy it, it was gone and she feared it was mailed.

Now she was invited to the country for a friend who was expecting and another guest was there with her husband and there sat Lord Northcourt, who was Lord Mystery. The other women were determined to throw them together a bit. She did confess to them what she had dine in her youth and all giggled over it. She had judged all men by him as she had imagined him and from his rescue and none had measured up. Now he is very wary thinking they are throwing them together and that she is in it. She is not finding him very pleasant but arrogant and too full of himself.

She and he are scheduled through the holidays when she should be going back to her grandfather's to consider some kind he thinks would be appropriate for his aging granddaughter. Both have considered leaving early. This was entertaining and interesting. Both are attracted to the other. He does not want to be caught. She dies not want to be embarrassed. He doesn't remember that they "sort of" met before. She is afraid he may but sorry he didn't even remember after her almost school girl crush. I recommend this and the other books I have read in this series. All have been good.

Why, or why, do foolish men make "Never to Marry" Pacts!

Robert Hurst, Earl of Northcotte, has a childhood friend who was killed by his wife with a fire poker to his head for being caught with his mistress. At the funeral, he and his other 6 childhood friends make a Pact to never marry. Men should know to never make a stupid "Never to Marry" Pact because its sets off their downfalls!

Lady Miriam Thornhill is beautiful and intelligent woman, but no one has ever compared to her perfect "Lord Mystery." Her Lord Mystery was a young man who saved her from a direct cut given to her at her first ball. That Lord Mystery was actually Mr. Robert Hurst.

At Christmas time, they both go to Hambleton Cottage to visit family and friends. Being around his sister and her family, Robert realizes he will never have any children of his own. Miriam holds baby, Annie, and sees pregnant Jane and grieves that she will never marry or have children of her own. So with scheming family and friends, Robert and Miriam are forced together right and left. Robert is mad that Miriam is trying to force a marry. Miriam is so angry that Robert doesn't remember her or the kindness he did for her at her first ball. These two clash and with the help of a horse, Robert really sees Miriam! Will Robert forget his Pact and follow his heart? Can Miriam replace her perfect "Lord Mystery" with the flawed Robert?

This was my first Aileen Fish book and I wish it wasn't a novella. The hero was flawed and raised to think marriage was a death sentence. Miriam just wanted to be chosen and loved. Ms. Fish added a scheming friends and family, which I loved. I like steamy and sexy scenes and this novella was to sweet without the spicy. I still enjoyed it and will read another Ms. Fish's books. I give this book my score of 3 fingers up and 7 toes.

NetGalley ARC given for my honest review.

Chasing Lord Mystery by Aileen Fish is a light, if too short, historical romance novella.
The story features Northcotte, who has recently sworn off marriage, and Miriam, a would-be wallflower who was once saved by a dance with our hero. Miriam has since romanticized Northcotte and has been waiting for her HEA with Lord Mystery for 6 years. Northcotte is suspicious of Miriam and thus acts like a cocky brat most of the time.

These two are thrown together, and with very little interaction and conversation, Northcotte re-evaluates his stance on marriage and realizes Miriam is exactly what he wants. Their romance was incredibly rushed and not entirely believable, and suffered from the short nature of a novella. Combine that with the fact that this story is also part of a series I have not read, and I felt lost at certain points, knowing I'd missed something from another book and left waiting on something more from this story.

I will say the novella was well done, however. It was interesting despite being a quick read, and the characters had substance. I have also been intrigued by the other men in the "no marriage" pact, and would like to see them find their fates as well.
3.0 out of 5 stars This is a Charming Historical Novella 19 Jun. 2014

Chasing Lord Mystery by Aileen Fish is a 2014 release. I was provided a copy of this book by the author/publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This regency period novella was really cute. A group of guys make sa pact after one their friends is murdered by his wife to never marry. This should keep them from being hit with a hot poker by a scorned woman.

For Miriam her first season was nearly her last when she was openly shunned by a potential dance partner. Lord Northcotte stepped in and saved the day. Miriam never forgot him even though she didn't even know his name. Now staying with her very expectant friend and trying to avoid her grandfathers match making, Miriam finds Northcotte is also a guest. However, he doesn't appear to remember her. Instead he spends all his time trying avoid being caught in a compromising position with Miriam because he is positive she is trying to catch herself a husband.

Miriam took her fantasy of Northcotte a little too far. Six years is a really long time to hold every man you meet up to a one time encounter. For Northcotte making the no marriage pact after his friend is murdered is also taken just a hair too far as well. But, it did make for a great comedy of errors and misunderstandings. Despite it's brevity this is a charming story. This one gets 3 stars.
