Book Description

31 Jan 2012

`That poor little body, passed from pillar to post, all those things that will be asked of her. All those tears and years wondering why her father betrayed her.'

Sarah Sawacki's past has made her a survivor. At the age of 28 her life is the best it has ever been. When she sees ten-year-old Andrea being kidnapped, her every instinct is to turn away. Sarah can only follow, journeying beyond reason for an innocence she little knew.

Andrea's father is ex-forces and struggling in a civilian world he cares nothing for. Only now his daughter is missing, has he realised how precious she is. Teamed with Sarah's husband, they use the trail left by Sarah to hunt for Andrea.

Legendary detective Francis Boer is dying. He will call upon all his intuition and experience as he works to discover why Andrea was targeted in the first place. His hope is not to catch the guilty, but to save one last innocent.

Product Description

From the Publisher

Chasing Innocence is a thrilling debut that blends fast narrative and intense action with an enthralling story.

About the Author

Born on May 16, 1967 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, John Potter spent most of his childhood daydreaming. Mostly he wanted to save the world or failing that be a goalkeeper. Realising he didn't have what was needed for either, he focused on a career as a programmer. A decade later he was working for himself, which took him around the world. He quickly realised the people he worked with and the cultures he was living within, were far more interesting than anything he was doing for a living. Intensely interested by the differences between cultures, and the marked similarities between human characteristics wherever you found people, John focused on studying human history and writing about his experiences. While watching a movie made by Peter Jackson in 2002 he realised that everything he wanted to say and achieve, existed within the creative realm. Having spent a lifetime daydreaming wild stories he set about focusing on making the imagery play as words on the page. One day in 2008 he saw a girl in a busy high street, who then subsequently vanished. Conflicted by what he should do, he went looking for her and found her stood outside a chemist. The idea for his first novel however, was firmly set in his mind. He immediately decided it would be a woman that saw the girl disappear, and what if the woman had been a victim when she was a child? Getting up at 5 a.m. every day to get in several hours of writing before work, and then writing for several hours after work, John spent two years writing and editing Chasing Innocence. He quickly realised lobbying agents was a terribly ineffective way of getting published, especially with the possibilities offered by modern technology. So he decided to setup his own publishing company. The goal was to produce a book that was at least as polished and entertaining, from cover to cover, as the best large publishing houses could produce. Chasing Innocence is published on January 31 2012. Already well into writing a second book and a new series character, John is also researching the sequel to Chasing Innocence, featuring his troubled and enigmatic heroine, Sarah Sawacki. John lives near Reading with his wife Katherine. Learning and researching with the sole end of writing enthralling fiction, is his passion. Along the way he also became quite competent at publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great thriller, great read. 18 April 2012

The start of this book I found disturbing mainly due to the subject matter a child kidnap. But from that moment onwards the book moved at high speed with a thrill a minute. This is a book that is hard to put down. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read stunning debut novel - 1 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a stunning debut by John Potter. It is one of the few books that has left me desperate to know what happens to the character and one that has made me think how I would react in such a situation.

The story features a host of fabulous and well developed characters and the pace is electric. There are a couple of sub-plots developing alongside the main kidnap story, and a lesson in human survival. The character of Sarah is incredibly well developed, and there were stages in the book where I had to read on, to see how a situation developed... leading to some late nights reading!

Ultimately, for me, this book is about our need and desire to protect children. The book deals with the horrors of paedophilia in a gentle way, hinting only at the horrors without ever needing to explicitly describe it. Potter is excellent at letting the readers mind fill in the gaps, and Sarah's sacrifice to protect the child genuinely haunted me... I wonder if I could do the same, in a similar situation.

The book is excellently produced, and taking a look at the front cover shows just how much effort Potter has put into making this book as professional as possible. There are some indie books that I have read where the `packaging' of the book is almost an after thought. The other noticable thing with Chasing Innocence the editing; this book has clearly had a professional eye cast over it. Again I cannot stress enough just how important good editing is toteh reading experience. All too often I have read books that contradict themselves or have glaring typing errors in or poorly constructed sentences. When this happens it's distracting and interrupts the flow of the book. What Potter has done is ensured that the reader is gripped by this book. The writing style switches effortlessly as we hear Sarah talking to Andrea or as we enter Andrea's world.

The twists and turns expected from any crime/thriller are in abundance in this book, and the violence that you'd expect is there too; often making the reader wince thinking of the pain the character must be in! - I'm thinking at this point about the warehouse scene with Andrea's father....

The manner in which Potter ties up the story at the end if also a good technique, and the epilogue leaves enough for the reader to develop their own future ending.

All in all is a stunning debut novel from John Potter and I can't wait to read future books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Innocence - Excellent! 14 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought a Kindle and I wanted to see how downloading books worked. I saw 'Chasing Innocence' very reasonably priced, and I saw a free excerpt, downloaded it quickly and easily and started to read the first few chapters.
There was no way I could leave it there; when the free chapters ended I was hooked! I bought the full version (Kindle directed me straight to it - very easy transaction) and it was on my Kindle in about a minute.
I have to say that it is one of those books you can't put down, literally. I read it quickly and I would recommend it to anyone.
The other reviews give the storyline so I won't repeat it but the author's style is excellent.
I read about 3 books a week and this is one of the bet I've read in a while.

Whilst the story was acceptable, like a lot of books I've read recently, some of the characters are a touch too heroic. Read more
