Product Description

Album Description

Convention dictates a course of action for a new artist. The radio singles should happen before the single CD album. Big radio hit, big video, big album. But, not all music needs to fit to the formula to be worthwhile… Maple Bee runs against all convention with her debut solo release – a double album of beautiful, challenging music. "Chasing Eva" is a record that it’s not easy to categorise. It twists and turns – loops mixed with real instrumentation, drums, bass and guitar sitting alongside flutes, recorders, organs and samplers, whispered sounds mixed with powerful vocal performances. From the beautiful, mellowing acoustic "Hello Eve" to the come down pop of "City In A Belly", from the dark, brooding "The Messenger" to the tongue in cheek Edith Piaf on acid that is "Perhaps Perhaps" (the only cover on the album – a barely recognisable take on the Doris Day classic), from the 80's electronica of "This Time" to the cello fronted urgency of "Alright (Build Me A House)". "Chasing Eva" is part Bjork, part Kate Bush, part Ultramarine, part Edith Piaf, but at the same time completely unique. It's a record that draws you into its dreamlike state… The record is largely self-produced but with notable additions from John Fryer (Nine Inch Nails, Cocteau Twins) and Dave Dix (Boo Hewerdine, Eddi Reader). "Around The World In A Day" - like, Maple Bee plays most instruments on the record. The record was recorded across a variety of studios, bedrooms and four track recorders. Maple Bee's solo album is just one side of her prolific musical output. From bassist with her sister's band, rock stalwarts Queenadreena, to singer and songwriter with the Mediaeval Babes, to guitarist/vocalist with much respected rock band Vertigo Angels. With 21 tracks of intimate and cathartic melodies, exploring joy and vulnerability in equal measure, with claustrophobic beats mixed with honey tempered instrumentation, "Chasing Eva" is a classic album just waiting to be discovered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joyous, 9 Aug 2005
Right... first things first. If you've read the other reviews, you'll know by now that this is NOT LIKE QUEEN ADREENA. This is important, so it is written in capitals. What it does sound like is... different. Maplebee's voice sounds kinda (sorta) like a cross between her sister and Bjork, with some vocal bits (particularly on disc one) sounding rather Debut-ish. In a very good way.

Most of the songs are fairly slow, quite subdued, and flow along very nicely, thank you. It's quite surprising how easily you can be absorbed by the music and suddenly realise several hours have passed and you've listened to the whole album through multiple times.

My one problem with the album is that the 'Perhaps, Perhaps' cover sounds a little out of place compared with the rest of the songs, but I'll let that go because it's one of the best songs I've heard all year. Seems fair.

If you're even slightly interested in hearing more, buy this album. It's the most deserving 5* review I've ever written. Not that I've written that many. I'm not like that. Hm.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maplebee, 17 Dec 2004
By Kd (London) - See all my reviews
I enjoyed listening to this album despite wrongly thinking it would be very much in the dark, rocky vein of Queen Adreena. I found that maplebee's take was much softer, with several bits reminding me of Tori Amos(without any direct references)and Bjork. The very soft, acoustic guitar background had some very beautiful work in it and some haunting noises in the background. I think this is definitely an album one grows into. The fact that Melanie Garside now also plays bass in Queen Adreena deceived me into thinking she would be her sister's spin-off, but this is definitely Maplebee's own record. Although Maplebee's music is not specifically my taste I know she will appeal to many.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful solo release from Maple Bee, 16 Nov 2004
Originally released some time ago as a 1-disc, home-produced solo album from the incredibly busy Maple Bee - She also fronts a band (Vertigo Angels), plays bass with another (Queen Adreena) and is a member of classical collective Medieval Baebes - Chasing Eva finally gets a proper commercial release. The original album returns as CD1 of this set, expanded with a video track and a complete second disc of original songs.

If you've never heard the more mellow side of Maple Bee, then you're in for a pleasant surprise. This is a double album of superbly crafted songs fusing acoustic and electronic instrumentation to create a complex atmospheric mix, featuring a voice of incredible range and beauty. For a quick and easy reference point think of an English Bjork. The heavily electronic cover of Doris Day classic Perhaps Perhaps could easily have come from an album like Homogenic.

Anyone new to Maple's music will find plenty of tunes to fall in love with here. And those long-time fans who remember her as Melanie Garside will be pleased to find three classic songs from the era of her 1996 album "Fossil".
