Review

'will appeal not merely to surfers but to fans of travel writing generally'
The Times

'fresh, ingenous and honest - will inspire the urge to explore' Huck
Magazine

'There is a dark side to surfing as Tom Anderson brilliantly conveys...
Anderson is wise enough to admit that the surfing mentality is skewed to the
point of madness... seemingly random surf dude conversations about love and
death and the state of the atmosphere play out a philosophical debate
between hedonism and seriousness, science and soul... demonstrate[s] that
the archetypal surfer does not exist and that surfers may be weirdos but
they are weird in wonderfully unpredictable ways.' The Daily Telegraph, June
13th, 2009

'surfing is finally getting the literary tradition it deserves... Anderson
travels the Eastern US seaboard during hurricane season, chasing waves
created by Hurricane Dean... Anderson's sharp and witty style, allied with a
poignant exploration of the nature of friendship, takes his second book into
contemporary Kerouac territory.' The Times, June 6th, 2009

'Part Moby Dick, part Perfect Storm... reads like a novel and has the potential to become a cult classic.' --Real Travel, July 2009

Real Travel, July 2009

'Part Moby Dick, part Perfect Storm... reads like a novel and has the potential to become a cult classic.'

Well, I thought Riding The Magic Carpet was one of the best books around but Chasing Dean is even better. Tom Anderson has the ability to make you want to drop everything and get out of here on a road trip. I never realised the east coast was such an interesting place because when you think of surfing in the USA you normally think California.

This time the book has more of a direct story that Riding did - which makes it really hard to put down. I read it in almost one sitting. I don't think anyone's going to write a better book about surfing in a while. Highly recommended.

Loved Riding the Magic Carpet and was really looking forward to reading this.

To begin with you are reading a book but before long you have jumped into the Betty Ford and the two of you are off on a journey together.

I love Tom's writing style and Chasing Dean lived up to expectations after "Riding". Dr Marc came across as very annoying and someone I wouldnt like if I met him - and I think I would have preferred someone else to have joined us on the trip! Bizarrely I became almost jealous of the amount of space Tom's thoughts about Marc took up in the book finding him less interesting than Tom himself. However this doesnt mean that the writing isnt interesting - the descriptions of places and people they meet along the way are never dull.

I agree with all the reviews above - the surf writing is incredible and even non-surfers can experience a little of the exhilaration of the waves through reading this and the New Orleans chapter is the best description of the events I have read to date.

A brilliant read - highly recommended.

Where are we going next Tom? I can't wait!

A ripper of a read 23 Nov 2009

I read this book when I was on a surf trip in France in the Summer. It is hard to put down once it gets going, and the way Anderson describes places (like the hotel in Miami) it feels like you are on the trip with him and Dr Rhys.

Thoroughly worth getting a copy - you will want to explore the East coast of the USA once you have finished reading it!
