Review

'Original and hugely entertaining!one of the most evocative and engaging books on Churchill I've ever read.' Andrew Roberts, Mail on Sunday 'Sandys' revealing insights into Churchill's character would be reward enough for this absorbing work; her engaging style and lightness of touch make it a double delight.' Yorkshire Evening Post

Product Description

An anecdotal history of Winston Churchill's foreign journeys -- for journalistic, political or holiday purposes, and in war and peace -- as told by his granddaughter Celia Sandys, who travels in his footsteps. With all his other remarkable achievements, it is easy to overlook the fact that throughout his long life Winston Churchill was an indefatigable foreign traveller. As a young man, his thirst for fame and adventure took him to Cuba, the North-West Frontier, the Sudan and South Africa. He experienced battle at close quarters, was taken prisoner, and made a daring escape which brought him worldwide fame at the age of twenty-five. As Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies and then as First Lord of the Admiralty he became perhaps the best-travelled British politician of his time, his unquenchable energy exhausting a succession of aides. Even during World War II, when he held his nation's destiny in his hands, there was little diminution in Churchill's foreign travel, as he made uncomfortable and hazardous journeys for face-to-face meetings with allies such as Roosevelt and Stalin, or to witness at first hand the progress of the conflict. Perhaps above all there was his lifelong love affair with the United States, the country of his mother's birth, to which he made repeated visits. In later years his growing passion for painting provided the impetus for other travels. His granddaughter Celia Sandys accompanied him on some of these late journeys, including a memorable cruise on Aristotle Onassis's yacht, and on his very last foreign trip. Now she traces her grandfather's footsteps across four continents. Wherever she goes, she finds people who knew, entertained or simply crossed paths with him. Many of them, she discovers, have stories which have never been told before, and which illuminate Churchill's character in unexpected and often surprising ways. 'Chasing Churchill' is a fascinating and entertaining insight into an important but often neglected aspect of Winston Churchill's life, and an engaging record of a unique quest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ray Higginson review:Chasing Churchill: Travels with Winston, 26 Aug 2003

This is a delightful book!
There are so many books about Churchill (over 900 titles available at Amazon) that you would think it impossible to write another book about Churchill that is original, entertaining and informative.
This book focuses upon Churchill's travels; South Africa, America and Europe. Its treatment of the war years results in entertaining anecdotes, which makes this book a joy to read.
It does not offer itself as a comprehensive biography of Churchill or attempt to analysis the man's political philosophy.
It does, however, provide many interesting little facts, which the author is best placed to describe and tell, particularly how Churchill insisted upon travelling, no matter how dangerous the situation.

The book also contains examples of Churchill's paintings and for this reason alone the book is of extreme interest.

This is an enjoyable, lighthearted read and deserves a wide readership.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Churchill, 25 Jun 2003
I enjoyed this book greatly. Like the author I would too like to follow in the footsteps of Churchill.
I had never really considered how well travelled Churchill was and the risks he undertook going to USA to meet Roosevelt during the war years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winston stands alone, 11 Dec 2011
This review is from: Chasing Churchill: Travels with Winston Churchill (Paperback)
Supremely inspiring tales of the greatest Englishman of all. Would we be here now but for Winston, it seems unlikely. You would not believe these stories if they were presented as Fiction.
