I've read this book a few times over the years. Read it a night and you'll start to hear noises yourself! It's a short book but get's it's point accross. The house indeed starts beathing then takes a life - then the next sound starts.....and so on. A creepy little number to keep your ears straining for that sound you're reading about.

Some of Masterton's older works haven't stood the test of time, and early on the same seems true of 'Charnel House'. The introduction of characters seems wooden and the plot seems almost laughable. Then it hooks you and as the story fills out Masterton goes to work, twisting a horror fable, rooted in legend, with plenty of shocks, mystery and blood. 'Charnel House' is a dirty gemstone which is easy to overlook, yet offers all the hallmarks that this esteemed writer has made his mark with. It's a short book, yet a real page-turner.

No one believes Seymour Wallis when he complains that his house is "breathing" - the adventure begins when public sanitation officer, John Hyatt is asked to check things out. What he's faced with is an ancient Navaho legend - an evil demon called 'Coyote'. Now Hyatt is involved in a race against time to stop Coyote from being reborn and leaving a trail of death and blood in his wake.
