"Penny Vincenzi fans will devour this." - Louise Bagshawe

Product Description

Beautiful, wild and wanton but do they really lead Charmed Lives? Kate Leonard is a high-flying young lawyer. Smart, sexy and successful, she seems to have it all, except a life outside the office ... until she meets Tom Faulkener.Tom comes from a different world: the privileged, idle world of private incomes, breathtaking bills and the pursuit of pleasure. The last thing he wants is a relationship ... until he meets Kate. But as Kate tries to juggle her hectic existence with the temptations of Tom's exclusive circle - irresponsible society photographer Charlie, shy but kind-hearted Douglas, and Tom's lovely but neurotic ex-wife Arabella - she begins to see through the careless glamour of their charmed lives...

The only thing I'd question about this excellent first novel is the title - but get beyond it. Character driven, entirely believable, this is a book which involves you from the first chapter. It's been packaged to appeal to the holiday reader (references to Penny Vincenzi on the cover) but it's far far better than that. The standard of writing makes you look forward to more thoughtful books from the author, but her ability to tell a story is the real discovery here. Notting Hill meets This Life meets Ally McBeal - television networks should be queuing up to get the rights - it would make a wonderful series.

Slow Start 2 July 2007
By LindyLouMac TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This first novel written in 2001 from Susannah Bates was a disappointment to me. Just another mediocre `chick-lit' writer though of course she may have improved a lot since then as I see she has had at least two more titles published `All About Laura' in 2002 and very recently Honor and Evie.

Very boring, very slow start, entirely predictable. I worked out who would end up with whom relationship wise, very early on and correctly.

In different circumstances I would have given this a miss altogether but I have a limited supply of English books at my disposal so read everything that comes my way.

I do not like to give books bad reviews as I always feel it is unfair to put others off, just because I did not enjoy it.

So if you are a fan of `chick- lit `you will probably like this one. The other reviews tell you all you need to know about the story-line.

This is a romantic novel involving Kate, a young lawyer, and the circle of friends she becomes drawn into through an irresistible attraction to Tom. Her work commitments and developing career create a tension with the opportunities and deceits in romantic and sexual liaisons. There is the professional world of deadlines and the charmed lives of those who do not need to work. Delightful descriptive writing in this novel makes it a real pleasure to read. Susannah Bates has a sensitive observation of people and the way they interact. She enters the thought processes of her characters, providing insight into what motivates them and the dilemmas they face. The narrative weaves around so that you can never be sure whether an interesting description is going to lead to a new twist in the plot, or is just to be enjoyed for its own sake.

The narrative is set in London, but includes episodes in Norfolk and Italy. You don't have to be familiar with the social or work scene that provides the context for Charmed Lives, because the understanding of human nature and relationships is all there, with all its possibilities for romance, sexual desire, disappointment and humour. Surely we can look forward to more from Susannah Bates in a similar vein.
