Amazon.co.uk Review

Sexy, silly, sardonic, somber: the fifth season of Charmed finds the Charmed Ones--sisters Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), and Paige (Rose McGowan)--on an emotional roller coaster. Yet they're also in a fairly comfortable groove with one another. McGowan, who joined the cast in year 4 as a replacement for Shannen Doherty, is now a perfect fit, turning Paige into a self-deprecating, uber-witch whose clipped dialogue meshes beautifully with Milano's neurotic phrasing and Combs' no-nonsense bark.

Season 5 ties up a lot of loose ends, heralds some major shifts in the show's running narrative, and ushers in a couple of new characters. One of the latter is Piper's baby by husband Leo (Brian Krause), the angelic Whitelighter whose role as an emissary of the heavenly Elders changes dramatically in the two-part finale, "Oh, My Goddess!" Before that happens, however, Phoebe must contend with the reappearance of her husband, the demon Cole (Julian McMahon), who is determined to win her back by proving his evil nature is under control. As usual, all the sisters must use the Power of Three to protect a number of vulnerable mortals, and even some immortals. Among these are a mermaid whose immortality is sought by a greedy demon, several wood nymphs frolicking in the streets of San Francisco, and married men targeted by a hot Siren with a killer kiss. Season highlights include "Happily Ever After," in which characters from multiple fairy tales come to life; "Lucky Charmed," a fun story introducing a demon-vanquishing Leprechaun; and "Sense and Sense Ability," a clever drama in which Phoebe goes deaf, Piper becomes blind, and Paige turns mute as the result of a wicked witch's spell. The aforementioned finale sees all three sisters officially acknowledged as the goddesses they truly are. But it also introduces a new, major character, Chris (Drew Fuller), who seems benevolent but may very well be a wolf in sheep's clothing. We shall see. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis

Debuting in 1998, the Aaron Spelling-produced television series CHARMED follows the adventures of three modern-day witches juggling their supernatural abilities with the demands of everyday life. The Halliwell sisters use their magical powers to protect innocent people from evil demons, who, in turn, attempt to steal the sister's powers for their own purposes. In order to shield the world from darkness, the sisters must protect their own powers from the lords of the underworld, and also rise above the childish bickering of sisterhood to work together as a team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another helping of charmed, 10 Feb 2009

This is yet another brilliant set of charmed episodes. If you are a fan like me, you will love it. The glamorous girls do battle against all manner of evils yet each episode is different and creative.

Fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but not as good as Seasons 1-4, 2 Feb 2009
By Mr. P. Abbott "The_abbott" (South of England) - See all my reviews

I enjoyed this box set for the most part particularly upto the 100th episode but it goes down hill when Piper's baby is born. As a male viewer all this gooing over a new baby is not my cup of tea at all. I've always enjoyed Charmed for what it was - three sexy witches battling evil with a touch of style, charm and wit but oh dear add a baby and things get worse!

I never really liked Charmed after this point. I preferred the show when it was much more darker. The 100th episode (the 12th episode on the disc) where Paige orbs into a parallel universe was one of the best of this 23 episode season. I also enjoyed "Cat House" which puts a new spin on the clip show which sees Pheobe and Paige go back in time to relive scenes from previous seasons. The opening episode has Alyssa Milano in a mermaid costume which is very distracting for male viewers!

If your a fan of Charmed I recommend this. If you want to get into Charmed then I suggest you buy Seasons 1-4 first. They were magic!
