Product Description

Product Description

Charm School is the eighth studio album, and first in ten years, from Roxette, the multi-platinum Swedish megastar pop duo. Following Marie Fredriksson's successful 2002 recovery from a brain tumour, the band took an extended hiatus during which both she and Per Gessle released solo albums. Reuniting in 2009, they started work on new material, the result of which is this album that trades in their classic polished pop-rock for a modern electropop sound, and includes the tongue-in-cheek single 'She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio)'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep On Dreaming 1 April 2011
Format:Audio CD
No, you're not dreaming. This isn't an April Fool. IT'S A NEW ALBUM FROM ROXETTE!!

How many fans thought that they would never see this day?

I ordered this CD from Amazon.de in February because I didn't want to wait for the record company to finally release it in the UK and it was worth every penny. It has been played many times.

It's great to hear Per & Marie singing together again. They sound fantastic.

There isn't a weak track on Charm School. Every one sounds really fresh and I didn't find myself thinking "this sounds like so and so".

She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio) is the perfect lead-off single. It sounds great on the radio (and it's nice to hear a Roxette song being played over the airwaves that isn't Listen To Your Heart!). Good on Radio 2 for A-listing it.

Radio 2 also made Charm School 'Album of the Week', which hopefully will well and truly get the message out that Roxette are back.

It's hard to choose standout tracks, as they are all so good but I particularly like Way Out, Speak To Me, Dream On, Black Cadillac, In My Own Way and After All.

It's been a very long wait but the main thing is that Marie feels able to return to the band full time. They are currently on an extensive World Tour.

Welcome back. We missed you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Roxette of old 8 April 2011
Format:Audio CD
This album is amazing.

Its much better than the last couple of albums. The songs are addictive, fun, and powerful. And most of the songs wouldn't sound out of place on the 'Crash Boom Bang' album. The tone and production is very similar. For example, 'Speak To Me' has the same feel as 'I'm Sorry.'

And boy is it a good thing! Its like a band that had started to decline has suddenly and perfectly recaptured the original mood that everyone was in when they originally started to adore them! Practically no other band has ever achieved this.

Some of the songs have an 'updated' sound though, but are still cohesive with the 'traditional' tracks. 'Black Caddillac' is disturbingly '2011.' It has the same sound as those boring 'boom boom boom boom etc etc' tracks that get played in nightclubs... except once I'd forgiven them for it and listened a few times, I actually realized how catchy it was, and how great the lyrics were around the repetition of 'black cadillac.' I forgave them, and now its one of my favourites!

The other updated sounding song is 'Shes Got Nothing On.' Wow what a track. The thing that really does it for me on this one is the complete professionalism of the harmony where both Per and Marie layer their vocals a few times on top of each other, creating a soaring that sends shivers don't my spine. It sounds so dramatic, not forced at all!

The only complaint would be the last two tracks. Uninspired and boring, lyrically and musically. Even so we're left with 10 amazing tracks that alone earn this album 5 stars :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album full of great songwriting 1 Mar 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I first heard that there was a new Roxette album out I thought it would probably be full of so-so songs as so often the case with songwriters is that understandably it gets harder and harder to come up with great songs. Per Gessle is unlike most writers though - the guy is a genius at coming up with tunes that don't tire and yet are catchy. This album does not have a single poor song - it's truly filler-free. At the price of what a CD single cost 25 years ago it's a giveaway price too. For me Per's singing is great - when he sings one part in his husky voice it creates a great contrast for Marie who can then come in with her sublimely smooth tone. I saw them too at Wembley in Nov. 2011 and they are at the top of their game after more than twenty years.

Bottom line is this album is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Charming! 29 May 2011
By D.A.C
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Roxette's previous album Room Service fell a bit flat back in 2001 and many critics would have had you believe that Roxette would not last for much longer.

After releasing new tracks and compilations sporadically from 2002 - 2006 poor old Roxette fell silent while Marie continued her recovery and Per released solo material and did the washing up.

In 2009 Roxette reunited live on stage for the first time since 2001, it was then that the roots for Charm School were embedded in the ground and then the tree started to grow and produced this, their 8th studio album and first in 10 years.

Way Out (10/10) A rocky, poppy, short and happy song. It grabs your attention with immediate effect and refuses to let go. It's not hard to see why this was chosen as a single.

No One Makes It On Her Own (10/10) A highlight, written for and sung by Marie this is Roxette at their balladry best.

She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio) Massive single in Germany and other parts of Europe and A-listed for 5 weeks on BBC Radio 2! This is a Per led pop song, loud and proud, cheesy and breezy. A good pop/rock/dance record that grows and grows (so much so that at the time of writing it's clocked up 416 plays on my itunes).

Speak To Me (10/10) A haunting, powerful, full on Roxette poppy ballad. Probably the best track on the album and their best song since Wish I Could Fly in 1999. A duet between Per and Marie the lyrics and melody grow and grow until you find yourself pressing repeat to hear it all again.

I'm Glad You Called (9/10) The first track that didn't 'grab' me on first listen, it's a ballad, mostly sung by Marie with a middle 8 thrown in by Per.
