Book Description

Charlotte's Web is the classic children's story by E B White.

The tale of how a little girl named Fern, with the help of a friendly spider, saved her pig Wilbur from the usual fate of nice fat little pigs.

E. B. White was born in New York in 1899 and died in 1985. He kept animals on his farm in Maine and some of these creatures crept into his books, such as STUART LITTLE which was recently made into a blockbusting film. He received many awards including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1970, an award given every five years to authors who have 'made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children'.

Amazon Review

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig", convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic with good reason 10 Feb 2007
By ELH Browning TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a beautifully-written story of a little girl, a pig and a spider who become loyal friends and how Charlotte, the intelligent spider, weaves her web to turn fate and rescue the pig from the dinner table. The vocabulary is great, fulsome and stretching for children used to Rainbow Fairies and Horrid Henry, and there's an underlying current of the passing of time, seasons, life and death. Written in the 1950s in America the book reflects an era perhaps gone-by where the world moves at a slower pace and yet the harsh realities of farm life and natural history are less hidden from children. If you are planning on reading Charlotte's Web to a child just moving on from the absolute innocence of early childhood, do be prepared for a couple of upsets: my daughter (6) was horrified at the thought that Wilbur, the runt of the litter and so hand reared for the first month, would be fattened up for the dinner table, and heartbroken when the heroine of the piece, the spider Charlotte, came to the end of her natural life, despite her having admirably achieved what she had set out to do. That said, we both thoroughly enjoyed this wholesome and memorable read and I thoroughly recommend it for 6+.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desert Island Book 22 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I read this as a child, many many times, and recently rediscovered it with my 7 year old boy. It's a beautiful story, beautifully written. It's about life, death, growing up, the passing of seasons, but mostly about friendship. The end is quite sad, but still hopeful--so do not avoid for fear of tears. Compulsory bedtime reading for all parents with children between 6-10 yrs.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring story 26 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
This is probably the best book I ever read as a child. A truly heart-warming story about a pig with a confidence problem!
I truly adored Wilbur's relationship with Charlotte and still adore reading this book today.
The story will bring you tears, happiness and sheer joy!
The book is based on Wilbur the pig who has been brought up by Fern, a very loving child who spoils him rotten! As Wilbur grows, he realises that he is being bred to be eaten! With Charlotte and the rest of the farm animals, the race is on for Wilbur to save his bacon!!

I hope you enjoy this wonderful story as mucha s I did!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not just for children 11 Jun 2007
By njk_85
Format:Paperback
I just recently read this book, at 21 as it came highly recommended by friends as a 'must read classic.' I thought it was a fantastic tale of friendship and didn't have a predictable everyone lives happily ever after ending.

I have heard more positive things about this story from adults than children, and think it is a story truly to be passed through the ages as parents read this much loved story from their childhood to their own children.

It should not just be dismissed as a 'kids book' as all ages can enjoy and identify with it's themes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 17 Oct 2006
Format:Paperback
As a child I loved this book, the characters are wonderful especially Charlotte, for a childrens book it is full of depth but in easy to understand language, it is sad but it just makes the book more poignant and i love the way it does not shy away from reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have 6 Dec 2002
Format:Paperback
Well what more can i say but this book is fantastic, when i was a little girl this was a book i used to read over and over again. I lost the book and to my delight found it on amazon. Amazon delivered within a few days (fantastic). The book is delightful and is about a pig called wilbur and he has a friend called charlotte and it is their story of epic survival. I Can not go into much detail about the book, as it would spoil it for any one wanting to purchase it, but what i can say is be warned that it could make you cry. The author is a very well known writer and has done some classic stories. This book is one i would recommend anyone buying especially for the children. This book is a pleasure to read time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful storytelling for thoughtful children 20 Sep 2009
By D. M. Farmbrough VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I expect most people who read this will know what happens at the end of the book, but in case you don't, I shall keep quiet. This last section marks the book out as a bit more mature than many children's books, dealing with concepts that some children can't handle until they get older. That aside, this is a wonderfully written children's story, taking place primarily in a farm yard and barn, telling of the characters with whom Wilbur, a pig, shares his home. The animals are all written so well, they seem like real people, and coupled with Garth Williams's excellent illustrations make for an enjoyable read for the 8-15 age bracket.

This story was recently turned into a film, and the book isn't that different from the film, however it does give nuances that only the printed page can bring, so is well worth reading even if you already know the story.

The story is so well-written it has won awards, and this small sample of prose shows just how good E.B. White is: "The Autumn days will shorten and grow cold. The leaves will shake loose from the trees and fall. Christmas will come, then the snows of winter. You will live to enjoy the beauty of the frozen world". It's just a beautiful piece of writing, showing that you don't have to talk down to children for them to enjoy books.
