Product Description

Including stimulating essays and an interview with the artist, this generously illustrated book thoroughly covers the images of and concepts behind Charlie White's three most recent photographic projects. Having explored in grotesque and thought-provoking detail the limits of pornography, the psychological landscape of Los Angeles and the emotionally fraught relationship between self-perception and appearance, this book subtly reveals White's relationship with and take on American identity and the image culture of Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shock of the New 24 Feb 2014
By Dr. Delvis Memphistopheles TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
So the photographer has reimagined a world derived from Sci-Fi books and horror films to take it back to the ordinary mundane world and ask "what if?" The first part of the back is a depiction of a Sci-Fi vixen in a wrangle with a penile monster which appears grotesque and erotic. The mixing of the two thematics is the core of the work. However there are other depictures which detail an alien invasion which are far from erotic. Then it is about the portrayal of an everyday terror as families are ripped open emotionally by confronting their darkest fears.

Other aspects of the photos show casual violence and the impact of ability/disability within a normative world and how people cope with the impact. Designed to jolt the senses these images will elicit a rubberneck invite into their everyday compositions or a quick recoil in complete disgust but it sets a yardstick in either case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! 13 Oct 2005
By CB - Published on
This book is incredible. I saw Charlie speak at the Semi-Permannet event in New York in September 05, and I rushed out and bought the book, praying to find some of the images he had shown. sure enough, it was packed to the brim with most of his work, and everyone that comes to my place and has a look at the book is either amazed or completly freaked out. I recommend a puff before reading. . .

5.0 out of 5 stars charlie white's images rock 26 May 2005
By T. Beck - Published on
charlie white's images push digital photography into the creative details usually reserved for paint on canvas. he resurrects fine art photography while at the same time pays homage to the history of sci fi and contemporary media. is there really any difference between doctor who and richard hamilton anyways? if you own a digital camera you should own this book...its more important than the users manual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting... 23 Oct 2006

Charlie White's got a unique style.

I personally don't like these photos -- a bit too grotesque sometimes -- but I like the idea behing the photos (i.e. Josh). The photos in this book often bring confused, embarrassed, but intrigued smiles on the faces of people who see them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Regarding photographic books 31 Mar 2002
By A Customer - Published on
This book is a clear and consistent example of this young artists work to date. With both solid essays, most importantly the Annabelle Chong text, and a well printed collection of images covering 5 years -or- three complete projects by the artist. If you are interested in his work this book is a good overview, maybe early, but very direct and satisfying to the art audience that can not reach NY. Unlike many photography books, this publication does a good job in illustrateing the images and allowing the reader to either read or look, not being forced to do both on the page.
