The Next Harry Potter?, 22 July 2011

Well, why not? Like J K Rowling, Gill Baconnier has brought a fresh approach to an idea that's literally out of this world - and has been done quite a few times before. And, like Rowling, she's managed this by placing a very believable, down-to-earth hero in a fantastical setting.
Charlie's a bit slobby and stroppy at times, like most twelve-year-old boys, but he has a heart of gold, a healthy curiosity and an endearing mischievous streak. His adventures tell you a lot about the history of Aix-en-Provence without ever sounding lecture-y and the ingenious plot offers a glimpse of a famous artist as he probably was.
The incidental details of a world in which time travel is, for some, almost mundane are intriguing and imaginative but are woven into the story naturally rather than ponderously explained. Some of the characters (particularly the villains) could be fleshed out a little more and I found the "now you might think.." authorial inserts occasionally slowed the story down somewhat.
But those are minor quibbles. Children's books can be the hardest to get right in terms of tone, but as a good resource for history teachers or a fun read for anyone of Charlie's age or thereabouts this seemed to me bang on the money. And it offered plenty of material for sequels - especially as Charlie seems to be discovering girls...
