I took my grandchildren to a reading of this book at a literary festival recently. Actually it turned out to be more of a "performance" with a set, an enormous book, music, sound effects and songs. It was wonderful and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We're still singing one of the songs. They sold out of books at the event so I ordered several copies on Amazon to give as Christmas presents.
It's a charming story about a brave little knight who embarks on a mission to rescue a prisoner from a rumbling, grumbling castle that everyone else is too terrified to go near.
It is a little scary in parts but that's no bad thing as it makes the message at the end even more poignant for small children: If something is troubling you, don't keep it as a "terrible secret" - tell someone your problem and you really will feel much better.
Of course, by the end of the book, not only has Sir Charlie Stinky Socks rescued the prisoner, he has found an unusual way to transform the crumbling castle into "somewhere fit for a king" Lovely!
The pictures are bright and very amusing and there are flaps to open which add an extra something to the book.
It's a great modern take on the sort of fairy story I used to read as a child, with an important message for little ones.
My only criticism - there is no CD to accompany the book, but perhaps this will follow.
