4.0 out of 5 stars The beboppers book of choice! 6 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If like me , you aspire to play bebop, then there is no better way of doing so than to learn from the master. There are many transcript floating around but its nice to have them all in one book.

I love it.
I cant play it yet.
But i still love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Charlie Parker Omnibook 4 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
This is a collection of transcriptions of Charlie Parker solos. In other words, someone listened to Parker's Verve sessions and wrote down what he played. The Omnibooks are available in a variety of keys: Charlie Parker was an e flat alto sax player, so if you are as well- buy the e flat version if you would like to play along with the cds. I bought the b flat version. There is a c version, even a bass one-presumeably for trombone. All of these enable you to play along with the original recordings.
Charlie Parker is considered to be the finest of all alto sax Jazz players. If you would like to step into his shoes, then one of these books would be a great help. The hot shots memorise his runs and riffs, then use them as the jump off point for their own improvisations. You could do worse.
I only gave it 4 stars as its layout is weird. The tunes are arranged in no particular order, so you look up a tune you like in the index which gives you the page number. Why?
Why doesn't the publisher just arrange the tunes in alphabetical order? Silly really.
Why am I writing this when there is no longer any chance of an Amazon prize for the best review and I have no financial stake in this book? it's an existential question at best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for tenor 20 Nov 2012
By David
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Contrary to the description 'for B flat instruments', this music, as transcribed, does NOT fit the range of the tenor. As I understand it, these transcriptions ARE intended to let us playalongaBird on CD - if we practise, of course. As a result the top notes are way out of reach. The editor's introduction says something like 'it's a challenge' or we should 'transpose down an octave' when we need to - that's ridiculous. I'm not saying this music isn't fantastic; maybe I was naive to think I could play it on my tenor anyway. I'm disappointed.

Plus Amazon have a policy of charging £6 postage for returns - the real cost is nothing like this. Besides, this product has been incorrectly described, so when I sent it back I should have received a full refund. Ever tried explaining this to a computer? It's not worth the time. Grrrr ...

5.0 out of 5 stars For Any Serious Musician 3 July 2009
By Music Is Everything - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Even as a Classical musician, I find great joy in this book. Yes, saxophonists would do better to get the E-flat edition, since that was Parker's axe and everything works better. As a trumpeter, of course I'm using the B-flat edition, which sits very well for trumpet. In fact, the range requirements are so reasonable that long practice sessions on this music at the end of the day are not overly tiring. This book is a window into Parker's genius, and a welcome diversion from repetitive exercises or square etude books, because the music is very challenging and complex. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bible 15 Feb 2013

If you are a jazz player - beginner or pro - and don't have this book you are missing out. It works as a way to learn the modern jazz style. As a phrase thesaurus. A sight reading tool. And a great way to combine your warm-ups with jazz ideas.

Bought for my Freshman son. He plays in jazz band and really got into this book. He said that the transpositions were accurate and that it was very playable, but still challenging.
