Product Description

In 1967, Charlie Richardson, together with his brother Eddie Richardson, ‘Mad’ Frankie Fraser, Tommy Clark and Roy Hall, appeared in N°1 Court of the Old Bailey, to stand in what would become known as the ‘Torture Trial’. All were accused of heinous acts of barbarity, and were anxious of their fate. They knew they must put their trust in the impartiality of the adversarial system, the bastion of the British judiciary and the envy of the world. Little did they know, however, that their trial had not only been hijacked, but was orchestrated and choreographed by a biased judge and jury, false witnesses, hidden agendas and coerced testimony.
The fearsome tales of Charlie Richardson the ‘Torture Gang Boss’ and his ‘Torture Gang’ have enthralled and appalled in equal measure for over four decades. Such tales are founded in bribery and corruption, compounded by years of Chinese Whispers and brought to life by the pens of Fleet Street hacks. All are thrilling, and indeed horrifying, to read; however, like a great many horror stories they are nothing more than works of fiction.
Here then, for the first time, is the truth behind the Torture Trial – from the arrest of Charlie and seventeen of his accomplices on World Cup Day 1966, to the climax of one of the longest trials in British criminal history.
“Tortured” is the culmination of three years’ extensive research, during which the author conducted numerous lengthy interviews with Charlie Richardson, delving deep into memories long since buried to unearth the true and remarkable story behind a fascinating part of British gangland history.
Charlie: The Final Word Mine For The Taking, also by Eleanor Parks, is the prequel to Charlie: The Final Word Tortured and is also available on Kindle.

The terrible lengths that the Police and the Government went to to ensure that Charlie Richardson was put away for good to so that he never got to tell the truth and clear his name. A sorry indictment of British Justice.
