He wanted to make a film about the French woman-murderer Henri-Dériré Landrue and offered the main role to Chaplin, whose film "The Great Dictator" was the biggest box-office hit at the time. Charlie saw the potential for the story to be the 'comedy about murders' that he had long sought to shoot. However, he wanted to direct it himself, so in July 1941 he bought the rights for the story from Welles. Chaplin had long been fascinated by the murderer Landrue, and so he combined Landrue's character with that of the English aesthete and murderer, Thomas Wainewrithe, who had appeared in an Oscar Wilde essay. The result is a black comedy about a family father who makes his living by seducing old maids, acquiring their bank account numbers and then murdering them. When this atypical film first hit in the cinemas, the world was not yet ready to look death in the face with a laugh. Today, however, it is considered one of Chaplin's finest works. - - - "Monsieur Verdoux" is part of the "Charlie Chaplin Remastered Collection" - a superb re-release of 17 of Chaplin's greatest works presented on 13 DVDs.
