I love Chaplin's films and have the box set (from The Kid onwards) and also the Chaplin review DVD. When I saw this with everything (Essaney and Mutual) in one box at a cheap price I thought it would be great. It wasn't.

The problem is the music. What we have here is jazz music that has just been put on the background with no regard to the scenes. It makes it impossible to watch, especially when you hear the band leader call out "Okay, one, two, three, four" in the middle of a chase (such as in The Vagabound). You could turn the sound down but accompaniment was an important part of silent movies.

A few years ago I have some VHS tapes with a few films which DID have decent music. This one does not and I find it impossible to watch. There is now a BFI DVD of the Mutual films with new music so I shall be getting that soon.

This is an extremely poor quality item. Many of the films aren't even framed well enough to play on an old TV. Several films are so badly cropped that the heads and feet of the people on the screen are completely chopped off.

Charlie spends a lot of the time on the edge of the frame while the activity in the background takes the stage. At these times he's often completely invisable and it's almost impossible to see how and why he's interacting with the other actors.

The documentary is also generic and totally uninspiring, with a large part of its beginning been given over to a description of London. For a time I thought they'd put the wrong documantary on the disc, and given the quality of the edit it wouldn't have surprised me in the least.

It's a shame that in their compilation films which such historical value could be so badly butchered. I can only imagine the company in question didn't have the rights to the original material.

If you can buy it cheap and you love Chaplain, by all means pick up a copy, but being asked to pay full price for this collection, to be honest, is insulting.

This item should be a historical record as well as a worthwhile entertainment product in its own right, instead what's offered seems to have been haphazerdly thrown together from tapes for a T.V. format that time forgot (not having the full width of the screen is bad enough, because it really does seriously detract from the quality of the product, but the heads and feet being cut off in some of the films is just unforgivable).

I only gave it two stars for the box and DVD trays. I bought these and I would like to inform anyone else that reads this review that I immediately wished I had not. The quality is so poor and the jazz music does not accompany the film very well. One film" Caught In The Rain" is mistitled as "In The Park" I should have spent a bit more money and bought the Chaplin films sold by amazon.co.uk that were issued by BFI. Chaplin at Mutual, Chaplin at Essanay and Chaplin at Keystone. I have since bought these and the quality is far superior and I recommend them to any Chaplin fan.

Unwatchably poor quality. The worst I have ever seen.

No attempt has even been made to adjust the contrast and brightness, so in some of the films faces are "bleached out". The framing is off, with the tops of heads cut off.

And some films are so marred and scratched that it looks as though it is snowing.

Outrageous to charge people money to watch films in such extremely poor condition.
