About the Actor
Warner Oland was born in Nyby in Bjurholm a village parish in the county of Vasterbotten, Sweden on October 3, 1879. Warner Oland's real name was Johan Verner Olund. He emigrated with his parents to the US on October 15, 1892. His father was the shopkeeper Jonas Olund and his mother was Maria Johanna Forsberg. His greatest success was in 1931 when he was cast in the role of Charlie Chan, a Chinese-American police detective based in Honolulu in the film Charlie Chan Carries On (1931) based on the popular detective mystery series by author Earl Derr Biggers [1884-1933] which was produced by Fox Films. His role as the charismatic Asian detective won him critic acclaim which landed him more acting parts in playing Charlie Chan following with The Black Camel (1931).

I recieved this DVD box set for Christmas and must have watched all of them at least three times since then.
There have been several actors who have played Charlie Chan but none have compared to Warner Oland.
All of the episodes in this box set can be found (in far lower picture quality) from various sources on eBay, but having bought them and then comparing them to the quality in this box set, there is no comparison. This box set is clearly superior and (for Charlie Chan fans like myself) worth every penny.
As for the previous reviewer who couldn't play them on his Toshiba DVD player, I think he must have been unlucky. I also have a (fairly ancient) Toshiba DVD player and had no problems at all. They also play perfectly on my Sony Blu-Ray player.
All in all, I'd recommend the set to any Charlie Chan fans who would like to see these episodes in the highest available quality.

I watched Charlie Chan when it was shown in the 80s on BBC2 on a Friday night at 6PM. I absolutely loved them. Warner Oland has a very gentle manner, and his relationship with Key Luke, who plays "Number one son" is why these films are filled with warmth.
The first film 'THE BLACK CAMEL' is obviously a misstep, as it is very different from the rest of the series.
The next film is 'CHARLIE CHAN IN LONDON' which, in my opinion, is one of the best of the whole series, as is 'CHARLIE CHAN'S SECRET', which has some great mystery elements and drama.
In fact, ALL of the films are great, with the exception of 'CHARLIE CHAN AT THE CIRCUS' which was probably the weakest film in Warner Oland's time as Mr Chan.
