1.0 out of 5 stars This Casanova lacks Charm 1 April 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This low budget Irish movie from Terry McMahon is like being sat on a long flight in a cramped aircraft next to an obnoxious person who has had too much booze from the drinks trolley. It is rude, crass, dull and above all it is boring. To be quite honest this movie is unbearable.

The story, if you can actually call it a story, revolves around the main character (Charlie Casanova played by E. Scanlon) and his three best mates. They attend a weekend work-related conference with their wives. It soon emerges that Casanova is a psycopath/sociopath, and things kick off. That is the crux of the movie and I learned this when I read it off the back of the dvd box. I could not make out what was going on in this train crash of a movie.

Nothing much happens in this movie. I found it a struggle to understand what the actors were saying, and thats funny because I was born and raised in the East of Ireland. There is no character development therefore its almost impossible to have any compassion for any of the characters. The film making technique is interesting; it is a MTV style jump cut editing style.

Overall this movie is a long, drawn out bore, and to be quite honest with you i am surprised I watched it to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and compelling 13 Nov 2012
By Sarah
Format:DVD
Not an easy film to watch: it demands that you engage with it, and I found myself thinking about it long after I watched it, and returning to watch it again. It has some of the shortcomings you expect from a film made on such a tiny budget, but there's no doubt about the creative imagination of the writer/director. There are a number of extraordinary, memorable scenes, and the central performance by Emmett Scanlan is astonishing. It stands or falls on his ability to keep your attention, and he succeeds brilliantly. Charlie is a hateful character, but the charisma and sheer force of the actor meant that I couldn't look away. Anyone with an interest in independent film ought to watch this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charlie Casanova 8 Nov 2012

I purchased the film as I'm a massive Emmett Scanlan fan, and I loved it!
The film is dark, with a great plot,
but funny too.
Definitely well worth a watch!
