I remember seeing this in 1975, I was twenty, just got married in November and life was much simpler then. I remember thinking that "A Charlie Brown Christmas" stood out as one of the few TV shows or programs that showed the true meaning of Christmas. I even told the BBC that, as I was on their viewer review panel. Watching it now and knowing how its existence came about and how it was put together it still holds together. You can see the joins though. Once you revelled in hearing your favourite Peanuts quotes spoken on the TV but now they sound disjointed, it doesn't flow. I will still give it five stars though as I enjoyed watching it again, a surreal nostalgic trip to an age of innocence that never was. It's all there, Charlie Browns angst, worrying about doing the right thing, a old head on young shoulders. Sally, mercenary to the extreme "All I want is what's coming to me, all I want is what's rightfully mine" How many times do you see actions today that speak those very words. Then there's Linus, his eye firmly on the ball, I'm sure that if he had been real he would have glided effortlessly thorough life, oblivious to the many slings and arrows that effect Charlie Brown. Linus recites from the bible about the birth of Christ proclaiming "that's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown." Thus reliving Charlie Browns anxiety at the over commercialisation of Christmas. Charlie Browns hopelessly weedy tree is transformed by Snoopy's Christmas lights from his award winning festooned kennel. But oh, Vince Guaraldi's amazing sound track, Christmas Jazz at its finest. The visuals may look a little old fashioned but the message and sentiment is just as relevant today as it was then and always will be, marvellous.

For two or three generations, 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' has been a Christmas television staple in North America. In an age of near-hysterical Christian evangelical rhetoric, the gentle tone of this animated gem is a welcome respite. It promotes compassion, sensitivity, friendship and generosity in an entertaining, charming style. Though some might find the narrative a tad sentimental (c'mon, it's Christmas!), it never condescends. And the Vince Guaraldi soundtrack is a Christmas classic in its own right.

I must admit I was slightly worried when I realised the dvd was coming from America, however this arrived quickly and played straight away with no problems. Love these short films, I love watching Charlie Brown and this is a fab Christmas dvd to add to my collection.

Ah, yes, a timeless holiday classic, but... 1 Oct. 2008
By Keith Paynter - Published on
Format: DVD
Warner Home Video now owns the Peanuts holiday specials, after years of ownership and video releases by Paramount. And it will sell - it's a perennial Christmas classic, and deserves every accolade. But...something is missing...

The original sponsor of this special was Coca-Cola, and, like many television programs and specials of the time, had sponsor bumpers in the program. Linus crashed into a "sponsored by Coca-Cola" sign, slingshotted his blanket at Coke cans, and the end credits wished us all a "Merry Christmas from your Coca-Cola bottlers". Due to broadcast regulation changes, children's programming could no longer include direct sponsoring, and the Coke references disappeared forever after the original broadcast. Therefore, unless somebody wants to pay Coca-Cola a huge amount of money, you will never see these portions, either restored or as extras for a true collector's edition. If you own a Paramount copy, don't worry about updating your disc.

Oh, and the greatest Peanuts holiday special is coupled with the very worst Peanuts holiday special - it has never aired on network television outside of its original broadcast. The more you know...

A great special, but somebody needs to step up and do this program up in a true collector's edition.

NOT the classic movie! 30 Nov. 2014
By BHC - Published on

I am so disappointed with this purchase. I bought this movie for my 3 year-old for her birthday, and when I opened the box, the DVD inside was a bunch of short clips called Charlie Brown's "Christmas Tales," NOT the classic "A Charlie Brown Christmas!" I fully intend to contact Amazon for a refund or replacement. My daughter was heartbroken to discover this movie wasn't the same as the book we've been reading in preparation for Christmas.

Wonderful New Transfer of Classic Tale 7 Nov. 2008
By John W. Yocum - Published on
Format: DVD
I love it! This disc is such an improvement over Paramount's disc, both in video and audio, that I don't know where to start. So I won't. And, it appears that they did use the first-year version of the film as there were a few animation errors that were cleaned up for the second and subsequent airings, according to the creators. I'm assuming one of those errors is towards the end when the gang is standing around C.B,s tree and humming. For one split second, Pig-Pen's head disappears, revealing Patty's dress behind him. RIOT! A true American classic.

Charlie, Charles & Christmas... all you need! 16 Nov. 2012
By RJ Nuzzi - Published on
Format: DVD
Stop right here! This one is it! Purchase this & none other! 'Charlie Brown Christmas' has never looked & sounded better. This is all the 'stuff' that is Christmas, at least up through 1965. Winter snow, ice-skating, snow-ball throwing, Christmas list to Santa, the nativity play & a not-so-great yet real tree... &, of course, a real lengthy scriptural passage read by Linus! Now it wouldn't be Schulz if there weren't his characters' cynicism, materialistic concessions & rants! This is the first real collaboration for Schulz, Melendez, Mendleson & the great Vince Guaraldi (music). And it was all conceived & completed in 6-months!!! This unimaginable, limited amount of time actually worked in its success in that it looks nothing like Disney, Looney Toons &/or a pedestrian children's Saturday cartoon.

Schulz insisted that the integrity & look of his strip be evident in every frame which allowed Melendez (an ex-Disney animator) to move the gang statically (much like how 'South Park' would look years later), complete w/asides & glaring close-ups... cheating, if you will, & yet establishing a sort of compromised 'strip-vs.-cartoon' hybrid. It gave it its look (which, by the way, lost its trademark style in the early '70's... ugh! What happened!?!)
The other remarkable element are the voices themselves in that real children were used on the soundtrack. Here we have the best, most memorable voices in all the decades of this (or any other) animation. Christopher Shea (as Linus) & Peter Robbins (as Charlie Brown) are the only voices... the only...! Even sister Sally's voice is the best. In later installments the children sound like they're reading a script as hired professionals. on 'Christmas' they sound authentically conversational, witty, sarcastic & 'charlie-browny'!!! They all were really funny child actors! Just like real kids (w/adult minds!)

Guaraldi's classic 'Linus & Lucy' is used effectively in the dance at the school auditorium, as is his gorgeous 'Christmas Time Is Here' so perfect to backdrop the skating Peanuts gang! Guaraldi is a genius with his remarkable use of jazz & melody on nearly all his Peanuts' scores. This one is particularly great, as sales of the CD soundtrack prove, still selling so well each & every year (get the 2006 remaster!)

Of course, the reading of the Gospel of Luke is not only remarkable for that time, but in the decades after, it so necessarily touching for this holiday! Only Linus can do this each & every year! Even though I'm agnostic it brings a warm feeling to me everytime I hear it... His lispy recitation is letter perfect & something only Charles Schulz can do through his famed cartoon character(s)! It brings every year to a special (& tearful) hault!

The only 'Christmas' classic w/great schdicky animation & script... a pot-pourri of all things Christmas, never to be topped again (except 'Polar Express'!). This re-release also includes 'The Making of...' & it's exciting to learn & watch. The added special 'Christmas Time Again' really lacks the magic of the original '65 classic as do nearly all the others after the '60's. Only nostalgia & chuckles... good grief!

We love you Charles Schulz... come back to us... & if you can't, at least we have this one-of-a-kind classic each & every year to remind us of you, Charlie & the gang, & 'what Christmas is all about!...'

5 stars for Paramount version; 1 star for Warner Bros version 7 Dec. 2010
By joe m - Published on
Format: DVD
I write this assuming you already know the story A Charlie Brown Christmas. Be warned that the audio on the Warner Bros version is a half second ahead of the video. It is more noticeable on the sounds (tapping of the aluminum tree, tossing of the directors horn) than on the dialog. This seems to only apply to the Warner Bros DVD, and not the Blu Ray.

I am not sure if I like the video on the Warner Bros either. It is a sharper image; but it also seems to be a negative quality.

This is a Christmas special that people watch every year. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have purchased the Paramount version from .

One more comment: The 'making of the Christmas special' is a nice feature that is included on the Warner Bros version.
