Book Description

3 Nov 2008
A beautiful single mother who writes a controversial column for the Palm Beach Post, Charley Webb has spent years building an emotional wall against scathing critics, snooty neighbours and her disapproving family. But when she receives a letter from Jill Rohmer, a young woman serving time on death row for the murders of three small children, her wall slowly begins to crumble. Jill wants Charley to write her biography so that she can share the many hidden truths about the case that failed to surface during her trial - including the existence of a mysterious man she calls Jack. But when Charley delves into the background of this deeply troubled woman, she starts receiving anonymous letters threatening to harm her son and daughter. Jill is safely locked away - so does this mean the elusive Jack is still out there somewhere? As Charley races against time to save her family, she begins to understand the value of her seemingly intrusive neighbours, friends and relatives. For this network of flawed but loving people might be her only hope of getting out alive.

this book arrived quickly and well packaged. Probably book was a bit more "distressed" than I had expected but I did not find this a problem.
Quite a good read but not one of Joy Fieldings best.

4.0 out of 5 stars THERE'S NOT MUCH THAT FRIGHTENS CHARLEY, BUT.... 23 Mar 2008
By Gail Cooke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:MP3 CD
Charley Webb is a successful single mom with what many might consider a dream job - she writes a column for the Palm Beach Post. What those who may envy her position may not realize is that along with the column comes not only kudos but also a lot of criticism. To date Charley has handled this well.

After unhappy, almost traumatic experiences, with those who are supposed to be near and dear she has isolated herself emotionally. So, when she hears from Jill Rohmer, a woman on Death Row convicted of murdering three young children, Charley thinks she can handle talking to her plus the idea of penning Jill's biography is pretty appealing. It would be the first literary effort for Charley and maybe a bestseller.

In all probability she didn't realize just how tricky dealing with a sick criminal mind can be because she soon discovers that Jill had an accomplice in the killings, a man equally deluded and dangerous. He is referred to as Jack but where he is or who he actually is Charley does not know.

What she does know and what terrifies her are the anonymous letters she begins to receive and the threats to her son.

Another can't-stop-listening-to thriller from Joy Fielding, and one more award worthy voice performance by the always remarkable Susan Ericksen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good fun 25 Sep 2010

I loved this book. Fast-paced and good fun. Keeps you hooked from the beginning. I expected it to be mediocre based on the blurb at the back, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Characters are well developed. The relationships take centre-stage and resonate with real life. I recommend this book

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic thriller 14 Dec 2010
I absolutely loved the ending, I just didn't expect it such way, well done Joy!
The book is a thriller, and although there is crime in it, I wouldn't say is a crime book, since the character that figures out who dunnit is not a detective or anything, she's just a columnist, living her own life, minding her own business, upsetting readers along the way, but hey, you can't please everybody.
I liked the book from the beginning, and wanted to finish it in one go!
