Review
"Timelessly relevant and well researched, this is a comics classic." - PW "Charley's War is one of the finest, most fondly remembered comic strips ever, a deeply radical, horrific reimagining of WWI." - Uncut"

Product Description
Renowned UK comics writer Pat Mills (Marshal Law, Slaine) and legendary artist Joe Colquhoun (Johnny Red) continue the thrilling, humorous and horrifying story of World War One soldier Charley Bourne.Returning to the front, Charley is reunited with old comrades Weeper and Old Bill - and, unfortunately, bully Grogan and the vile Lieutenant Snell. As the bullets fly and bombs fall, Charley faces as much danger from his own ranks as from the enemy's...Rich in the detailed minutiae of the terror-punctuated existence of a Tommy, this fifth volume of "Charley's War" features a brand new introduction and director's commentary by Pat Mills, plus exclusive bonus content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another marvellous volume of a classic, 29 Dec 2008
By DavyA (Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
A wonderful collection of stories from the frankly magnificent "Charley's War". Receiving these collections for Christmas,as I tend to do,I eagerly devour the contents on a Christmas night when the family have left & the kids are in bed.
This is the volume where the pure arrogance and cruelty of Lt. Snell come to the fore and where the conflicts between volunteers and conscripts, leads to bullying, mistrust and some tough decisions being made.
As ever, the stories are wonderfully written and the artwork is superb. This is a comic strip like no other and is, to my mind, one of the greatest ever conceived.
The horror of the Great War, the misery, the suffering, the valour, the pain and the gallows humour, they are all captured in both the text and the pictures - just marvellous all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently Gripping and Involving , 25 Oct 2008
By The Kinniburgh Kid (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
As with all the previous editions, this latest collection of the Charley's War strips is made up of wonderful, detailed and moving artwork carrying along great story-telling.

Through Charley we see the effects and impact of the Great War on an ordinary bloke. Although a fictitious character, Charley goes through what real men did thanks to through research by the author and artists. The politics and social comment might be over done, or it might just be an accurate reflection.

Charley's War is about as far removed from Batman and Superman comics as you can imagine, but is all the more powerful and memorable for it. As this is the 90th anniversary of the end of the Great War it is a good time to read (or even re-read) these stories.

Highly recommended for all ages and all levels of knowledge on the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unintended Comedy, 21 Jan 2009
Another year, another welcome Charley's War compilation.

I can't help but feel that the intended effect of Titan's lavish reprints has backfired somewhat. On the one hand the series' writer, Pat Mills, is already well known - primarily from his extensive work at 2000AD. But his deluded introductions and alternately paranoid and self-congratulatory commentaries have exposed him not as the daring, Establishment-challenging radical he obviously imagines himself to be but as a true life counterpart of Private Eye's spoof Dave Spart only funnier because he's really real.

By contrast Joe Colquhoun, the artist on the strip, was a name only familiar to afficianados. But these reprints have brought his fantastic art a whole new audience and level of appreciation. Joe is (was) a superb example of the level of artistic talent British comics could call upon in those days - a modest but highly talented professional compared to Pat Mills' shrill egomaniac. This collection shows the scripts descending further into the turgid agit-prop which Pat Mills subsequently made his trademark but the quality of the art pulls the reader through those passages effortlessly. Mills' states that Joe Colquhoun can claim 50% of the credit for the success of the strip but each of these new collections is proving that the artist's contribution was far higher than that. Recognition that's as long overdue for him as exposure as a posturing ninny is for Mills.
