"Timelessly relevant and well researched, this is a comics classic." - PW "Charley's War is one of the finest, most fondly remembered comic strips ever, a deeply radical, horrific reimagining of WWI." - Uncut"

Product Description

Renowned UK comics writer Pat Mills (Marshal Law, Slaine) and legendary artist Joe Colquhoun (Johnny Red) continue the thrilling, humorous and horrifying story of World War One soldier Charley Bourne.Returning to the front, Charley is reunited with old comrades Weeper and Old Bill - and, unfortunately, bully Grogan and the vile Lieutenant Snell. As the bullets fly and bombs fall, Charley faces as much danger from his own ranks as from the enemy's...Rich in the detailed minutiae of the terror-punctuated existence of a Tommy, this fifth volume of "Charley's War" features a brand new introduction and director's commentary by Pat Mills, plus exclusive bonus content.

A wonderful collection of stories from the frankly magnificent "Charley's War". Receiving these collections for Christmas,as I tend to do,I eagerly devour the contents on a Christmas night when the family have left & the kids are in bed.
This is the volume where the pure arrogance and cruelty of Lt. Snell come to the fore and where the conflicts between volunteers and conscripts, leads to bullying, mistrust and some tough decisions being made.
As ever, the stories are wonderfully written and the artwork is superb. This is a comic strip like no other and is, to my mind, one of the greatest ever conceived.
The horror of the Great War, the misery, the suffering, the valour, the pain and the gallows humour, they are all captured in both the text and the pictures - just marvellous all round.

I remember reading the 'Battle' comics as a lad, and 'Charley's War has always stood out and remained etched onto my mind. Even with the passage of time (very late 40's) i came across these fanastic books, and the stories, the references to actual events and the very detailed and graphic artwork are in my humble opinion, still the best ever comic stories produced.
Before computers history was contained in great volumes of reference books, but Pat Mills and Joe Colquhoun changed all that and simply inspired a young generation to take an interest in history.
This is particularly true in the day to day life of soldiers in the trenches during the First World War. The stories are told with humour, sadness and the feeling of absolute terror faced by everyone on the frontline fighting this war.
This is the fifth volume of the series of 'Charley's War', concentrating on Charley's encounters with his odious commander, Lieutenant Snell.
These books are great if you want to read about the First World War, or if you simply want a nostalgic trip down memory lane.I intend purchasing the other two volumes of this superb series.
Highly recommended.

The Stinking Trenches 30 Oct 2009
By Mr
Format:Hardcover
I have a love for the good graphic novel - e.g. Preacher, V-Vendetta (awful film though), the Invisibles and the humorous out of the punisher novels (I wish someone had done a Dirty Harry Series) and the later Bill Savage stuff.

I look forward to passing these onto to my future son or daughter (don't worry she'll like em or feel the back of my trench harden hand) but out of all these Charley's War is the one I will definitely give him or her first. The eagle ran a great tale suitable for children and still fascinating for adults bringing to life the evil of the trenches but with energy and melancholy rather than depression. The rest of the Eagle paled into insignifance beside Charley, the early Bill Savage though fun is not for adults. I definitely would not activitely hand on Commando mags because although there is nothing wrong with grabbing a Bren when times get tough the morals are too simple. There are only so many people you can whack before you get damaged as the characters in the tales mentioned above.

Young Charlie is a legion.
