Book Description

3 Oct 2013
This story tells of the beginning of a close bond of friendship between Henry and his new pet dog, Charley. On Charley's first night, Henry carries his new puppy in his old baby blanket, all the way to his house. He shows Charley every room, saying, "This is home, Charley." Henry's parents make it very clear where Charley will be sleeping: in the kitchen. But when Charley starts crying in the middle of the night ... Henry simply can't leave his puppy down there by himself! With warmth, humour and endearing simplicity, Amy Hest tells a tale familiar to everyone who has loved a puppy, while Helen Oxenbury's illustrations portray each tender gesture and charming detail. A beauty of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful! 20 Oct 2012
By Books Come Alive - Published on Amazon.com

This is a gem! Amy Hest should give seminars for authors of books for primary readers. This simple story is simply beautiful. The words are simple to understand and seem to be written by Henry Korn, the little guy who brings home an adorable dog. The illustrations by Helen Oxenbury are exquisite and add a perfect addition to these sensitive, and heartwarming words.
This is the book I have been waiting for. A warm, honest look at the innocence of a little boy and his love for his dog.
I will be using this one for K-2 grades all year. I can't wait for my next session to share this with teachers, parents and kids!
5.0 out of 5 stars and beautifully written. The illustrations are also lovely -- classic ... 9 July 2014

The text is simple, clear, and beautifully written. The illustrations are also lovely -- classic Helen Oxenbury (who also illustrated the Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes board book, All Fall Down, Tickle Tickle, We're Going On A Bear Hunt, etc.). Preschoolers in particular will love this book as it is about a boy who appears to be about their age, who is taking care of his puppy -- and there are nice little touches in the writing that really make it sound like the story is being told in the little boy's "voice," e.g. he talks about picking Charley up "in my strong arms" -- that made me laugh, as my own preschooler likes to emphasize his "muscles" and "how big I am." I am ordering the sequel to the book, "Charley Meets Grandpa" because our family has enjoyed "Charley's First Night" so much. Only downside is that your kid will probably beg for a dog, if he or she doesn't already have one.
