Product Description
Classic British comedy starring the inimitable Arthur Askey in an hilarious drag role. A group of Oxford students are on its final warning for a 'long list of delinquencies' including drunken behaviour and miscellaneous high jinks. While on probation, one of them slips into drag in order to play a part in a school drama and is rumbled, landing him and his two chums on the carpet yet again where, they are informed, they're expelled. Undaunted, the would-be queen then dons drag yet again and plays his imaginary Aunt Lucy - a wealthy philanthropic type who promises to put all manner of money into the kitty to fund an Egyptian expedition - in exchange for the salvation of a certain three scholastic careers.

"charley's big-hearted aunt" is a more tolerable film from arthur askey as he at least had the good fortune to have secured the talents of those wonderful supporting players, moore marriot and graham moffat.
the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense but the laughs and the dialogue are fairly effective and they both help to fill out the film's 75 minute running time. the film sets are a bit limited as they mainly revolve around life at a university.
as a special feature, there is a brief highlight of an interview with askey many years later from the early 1970s. i have to admit that his interview was quite interesting and dare i say it, entertaining!

Funny Take-Off on the Play

"Charley's Aunt" is a classic and well-loved play. Jack Benny starred in a movie version of the play, and that movie is well worth seeing. This movie, however, is not a film version of the play.
"Charley's Big-Hearted Aunt" is a clever and very funny take-off of the play. Arthur Askey is very funny as Lord Fancourt Babberly, who is starring in the play "Charley's Aunt" while attending Oxford. He is reluctantly talked into playing the part of his classmate's wealthy aunt (since he already has experience at playing an aunt) to avoid getting kicked-out of school. The real aunt, of course, shows-up. The writing cleverly weaves elements of the actual play in and out of the story.
I managed to get a nice copy of this on EBAY for $4.00.
