Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIV. CONVERSATION CIRCLES. Simeon's diligence as a pastor and preacher was the main foundation of his religious influence, and with this must be remembered his activity as a writer, and the very large circulation of his published Sermons and Outlines. But his work for religion in the University and in the English Church was carried into detail, and personally applied, in his chamber-gatherings of gownsmen more than in any other way. We have seen how early he took up this line of work, in his small sermon-parties and private lectures on religion. To the last these labours were maintained, and the numbers of men who entered his rooms continually grew. It may be interesting to describe the place of such gatherings; his abode in the Fellows' Building at King's College. From 1782 to 1812 he occupied, as I have said above,1 a set of rooms on the ground floor in that building. In 1812 he removed to a larger set, where he remained till his death, four-and-twenty years; and those rooms saw his most numerous gatherings for instruction and conversation. The visitor who enters King's College from the front 1 Page 7. sees opposite to him the stately length of the Fellows' Building, now a hundred and sixty years old. It is broken midway by a lofty arch, through which the great lawn is seen and the trees of "the Backs"; and over this arch appears a large semi-circular window. This window lights the front room, or dining-room, of the set which was Simeon's. Another large chamber, which he called his drawing-room, looks the other way, westward, through two sash-windows. The bed-room adjoins the dining-room, and out of it a steep staircase leads to a spacious attic in the roof.
