5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Music you have never heard 9 Aug 2006
By avl06 VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I was fortunate enough to hear this on Radio 3 CD Review - otherwise I may never have heard of Koechlin. These are astounding works - sumptuous, evocative, highly romantic, and given superlative performances. Likely to be my CD of the year, I urge you to pick up a copy and immerse yourself in a sensual heaven of sound!

5.0 out of 5 stars superb performances of early Koechlin music 23 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
Koechlin left an enormous amount of music at his death, much of it unperformed or at best performed just once during his lifetime. His archive has ended up in Kassel and, considering the cavalier attitude the French have to their own heritage, we should be grateful to the SWR orchestra and the Swiss Heinz Holliger for exploring the music of this prolific composer. Especially when it produces such luscious trouvailles as the works on this disc.

All of the works are from the earliest period of the composer's career and are thoroughly worth hearing. If they presage some of the sound world of the Viennese School (none of which Koechlin can have heard prior to 1910) then it could be that there is a common influence on both, namely Dukas' Ariane et Barbe-Bleu which was performed in Vienna early on and made a great impression.

The orchestration - unbelievably refined even at this stage in his career - is superbly captured by orchestra and recording engineers, and Juliane Banse sings superbly. Highly recommended but I have no idea what the price is all about. £56 for 2 cds. Other recordings in these same series are normally priced. I was lucky to obtain a mint second-hand copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needle in a haystack 24 April 2006
By A reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I notice that this set hasn't been reviewed by anyone else. That's too bad, but understandable--who is Charles Koechlin? All I know is he should be much better known. This set offers up nearly two hours of sustained beauty on a par with the works of Debussy, Duparc, Faure, and Ravel. Why take my word for it--check out some of the reviews online (a good handful are collected at the Koechlin family website, koechlin.net). Opinions from France, Belgium, Germany, Britain, and the U.S. are unanimous, and everyone asks the same question: where has this music been for the last 100 years? If you troll through lists of new releases wondering whether there are musical masterpieces out there of which you've never heard, and if you adore the music of the composers named above, this set is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real surprise 17 July 2012
By M. Henri De Feraudy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I really dont have much to add, but I thought it would be worth confirming that everything is right in this recording:
The soloist, the orchestra and its direction and last but not least the haunting intensely colourful music.
I've been playing this music over and over again.
By the way Koechlin is not an unknown composer in France, far from it, but somehow I had not got to listening to any records.
Now I want to go on a discovery binge.

Exquisite is the word.
