4.0 out of 5 starsgreat bio of the best of the best story tellers!16 Feb 2013

the quality of the book is...well...it's like a photocopy of the original book and since getting an original edition would mean having to sell my house, i am grateful for this beautiful and well copied piece. the cover is gorgeous, isn't it? i've dabbled in the reading of it, but have been wanting a copy of Forster's biographical Dickens for a long time. i recommend it, but it is odd to get used to the way the original manuscript sits rather small on each page...

As the Leavises point out, Forster was a contemporary of Dickens, a friend, and so uniquely placed to write a biography of the great novelist, even if it's colored by bias.
Edgar Johnson is the really indispensable modern biographer, but if you love Dickens, you'll want to read Forster too.

This is something like a rip off. We ordered the volume and it arrived promptly. However, it only contains the second part of the whole book, parts 1 to 5 being omitted. Why ?

This was written by a person close to Dickens and knew him very well. A very informative biography. An enjoyable book.
