A very clear and readable account of Darwin's life, which rapidly converts the reader into an amateur expert. The author obviously greatly admires his subject and yet is unafraid to point out character weaknesses. The result is a very balanced and entertaining book, full of interesting and sometimes astonishing detail that brings the man to life.

Particular strengths are the descriptions of Darwin's relationships with Captain Fitzroy, money and ill-health: these themes are brought in throughout the book and really leave the reader with a strong impression on how it was to be Charles Darwin. The final chapter, which is particularly interesting, is the author's personal view on a man who was "...an obsessive, whose obsession just happened to turn the world of his contemporaries upside down." which neatly summarises the importance of this revolutionary scientist and puts his life in context.

Cyril Aydon's book on Charles Darwin is well written and easy to read - but it contains little (if any) original material. As a general overview of Darwin's life and works, it is an excellent starting point, touching briefly on all the major events of his life. Those already familiar with Darwin's story and his writings on Natural Selection, will find nothing new in its pages. Readers with a scientific background may find it rather lightweight. But if you are not already acquainted with Darwin and Darwinism, then the book is recommended as a clear and concise introduction.

An excellent introduction to Darwin's life & work...for an armchair enthusiast of all things Darwinian & evolutionary theory, I can thoroughly recommend Mr. Aydon's work as an essential reading for anyone interested in the above. I can only refer to Dr. Ernst Mayr, who at the age of 92 remains the leading evolutionary biologist of the century...see his opinion of this book. Check this book out...!
