Half of this book is interesting and entertaining, the other half is completely taken up with names, dates, biographical details etc at the end of each chapter. I ended up skipping the addenda which is half the book. Gyles Brandreth indulges in copious amounts of name dropping which is extremely tedious.

I wanted to read about this couple, their life, etc. what you get instead is a VERY boring description of how great grand parents and even older generations of both might have had a connection. Also the writer brags about closeness with royal family but in reality doesnt seem to know much as the book is more about historical research of their families than of them actually

I enjoyed the style of writing - as always Gyles amuses. The first couple of chapters get too involved with the history of adultery in all the families but once the book reaches the details of Charles & Camilla's lives and affair then it becomes a good read. Although the book is sympathetic the behaviour of Charles, Camilla and Diana does show all three as selfish in their own way.

Gyles Brandreth is undoubtedly a bit of a wally, but this book reads well: it's quite funny, seemingly well-researched and warm - but there are about twelve too many extraneous and gossipy facts as footnotes. Also it is very biased in favour of Charles and Camilla's relationship from the start - let's not forget that they started their relationship years before Charles met Diana and continued it throughout the marriage. The book paints Charles as a bit of an indecisive wimp, but basically a nice chap. The view of Camilla seems to be neutral - and although guilt on both their parts is assumed, it is glossed over with a vague notion that mistresses are just a part of royal history.

Surprised to see that Beryl Bainbridge gives it such an accolade on the cover - a pretty good book, but can't wipe the memory of Brandreth circa 1982, in a silly jumper, boring us to tears on the television.

Tedious, jumps about too much and irrelevant insertions tells us nothing about the main protagonists, very sycophantic, almost fawning. Not your best work at all Mr Brandreth

The Prince of Wales had to wait a long time for complete happiness and at long last she is by his side as his wife. They are a delight and a joyous couple and they deserve a long life together. Gyles Brandreth writes a compassionate account.
