The Charlatans have never been a particularly visual band, as this video proves. It's clear from the selection on offer here that the Banquet years meant music for music's sake, with relatively little money spent on flashy videos and only "Just When You're Thinking Things Over" has any sort of narrative. Tim Burgess seems at a loss to know which rock-god look to emulate throughout most of the videos, from the Mad-chester bowl cut of "The Only One I Know" to the Gallagher swagger on "How High" and the Mick Jagger-esque tendencies on "Jesus' Hairdo". The live performances don't fare any better: without an anthemic song in sight the band lack the tightness and professionalism of their gigs in later years. But for fans this collection is essential memorabilia of one of Indie's finest.
On the DVD: Just Lookin' provides disappointingly poor sound quality for the live performances, with the bass and vocals too low in places, and the "gig" atmosphere lost. The best the disc can offer is only Dolby 2.0. The music videos were not of the highest quality to begin with, but their grainy quality in-a-way is part oftheir charm, reminiscent of a time when everything was not a glossy MTV advert. The disc includes the US version of "Weirdo", which is the only version available. --Nikki Disney

A Must Have,
This review is from: The Charlatans - Just Lookin' - 1990-1997 [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
The first DVD that has been released that concerns the band after long demands. This unique and probably long awaited DVD is somewhat well worth it and one that Music Lovers should own. It features all the Music Videos from the band in their era with Beggars Banquet and also some live performances and rarities. It's obviously a treat for the fans who have followed the band in their long career. The DVD itself lasts over two hours so every penny is well spent. So if you want to see Tim's long hair in the old days, Martin's wacky goatie or the late Rob Collins then you should definetely get this one and dance to the various styles that the Charlatans have emerged with in their prospective career.

If, like me, you feel The Charlatans gold era was 1990-1997 then this DVD is a must for you. It contains all 18 promos videos made for the singles released in and around their first 5 albums. There are also 4 different concerts with 3-4 songs from each. Also included is a full discography. I felt in some ways The Charlatans died when Rob died. Their post Rob/Tellin' Stories material has never quite reached the same heights as the material on here.

Being a Charlatans UK fan since day one and having seen them put out good records and not so good records, I can honestly say that this DVD collection is such an unreal bargain. The live tracks in particular showcase what a phenomanal live band the Charlatans were, especially with Rob Collins. A few tracks are performed here to such perfection that it's nearly impossible to listen to the studio versions any more (those being the psychedelic "Everything Changed" and "Indian Rope", the band's anthem "Sprosten Green", and the surprisingly upbeat "Get On It"). The videos are good for nostalgic purposes, but the live tracks are worth the purchase. Enjoy this one. It's FANTASTIC.

I can believe the previous positive review. Own the laserdisc predecesor of this DVD (minus some tracks). This group is so underrated in the music world. Must have had bad management. As one of the group members states, you either love or hate them, no in between. I think they're great!!
