Product Description

A Virgin Birth?

It’s 1984 and Charity Baker, aged 16, is pregnant.

Who is the father of her child? Could it be Alan, assistant pastor of the Crabapple Christian fellowship? Or could the father, as Charity is claiming, actually be God? Charity’s friend Joanne has her own reasons for needing an answer. But the truth, when it emerges, is dark enough to shake the strongest faith.

From a review of the first edition by Sam North, hackwriters.com:
"Rosalie Warren writes with authority... This is a disturbing, powerful tale..."

From an Amazon reviewer of the first edition:
Charity's Child is un-put-down-able - I read it in one sitting. Although targeted at teenage girls, it is highly readable for women of any age. It deals intelligently with some very uncomfortable issues;... religious fervour, marital breakdown, child abuse and the damage done to the minds of those involved. All the characters are absolutely credible and even the villains are treated to some sympathy in the search for understanding.

'Charity's Child' was first published by Circaidy Gregory Press in 2008. This is a revised edition. A sequel is underway.

Recommended age: 14+

4.0 out of 5 stars A Riveting Read! 29 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book very quickly took me back to those feelings of insecurity familiar to teenagers everywhere. The start intrigued me and I was soon hooked by writing that drew me straight into the story.

The author is not afraid to tackle big issues - from religious fundamentalism to teenage sexuality. This means the book is not always a comfortable read but the serious nature of the issues means some discomfort is justified.

The roller-coaster of teenage emotions is portrayed in a sensitive and sympathetic manner. The author never flinches from addressing concerns that are often ignored and thought-provoking questions are raised throughout.

That said, this is not an oppressive read as the book is ultimately about friendship and hope.

I found the book compulsive reading and the characters and issues have stayed with me since completing it - a testament to powerful story-telling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read. 13 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What I particularly like about Rosalie Warren's books is that she isn't afraid of touching on difficult or sensitive issues, and she always handles them in a way that makes for enjoyable reading.
While Charity's Child does involve religion, lesbianism, child abuse and other serious issues, it's not as if this is a book written about these issues; these problems are just interwoven with the characters' lives. I found this book to be a great read that hooks you from the very beginning and holds onto you until the very last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars What does it mean to be a teenager? 2 Jun 2012
By Debbie
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is marketed as young adult, but works just as well as an adult book - indeed some of the themes may not be appropriate for the younger end of the teen market.

I liked the voice in this - told mostly from the perspective of Joanne, Charity's best friend, as she watches a simple thing like a pregnancy destroy the lives of everyone around her. And a twist at the end that I didn't see coming at all yet was perfectly set-up throughout the novel.
