Book Description

All of London is waiting for the wedding of Oscar Ryall, the charming Lord Carrington, to this season's diamond of the marriage mart. Yet Oscar himself is less than happy with the circumstances that brought about his match to the coldest woman he's ever met. A woman he'd schemed to capture from the start, but who trapped him by scandal instead. Although bred to do his duty and wed as arranged, he's plagued by doubts about marrying the girl. What he wants is his former lover back in his life to turn his mind from the demon plaguing his dreams. Yet Agatha Birkenstock refuses to resume their relationship and the nightmares increase every day.

Agatha Birkenstock was devastated by Oscar's betrothal and his offer of carte blanche broke her heart. Granddaughter to a wealthy cit, Agatha could never be happy as Oscar's mistress and vows to protect her heart. But when they're forced to work together to save her beloved orphanage from closure, she's hard pressed to keep a proper distance. Although few in society seem to notice, Agatha glimpses the suffering in his eyes and against all sense, risks her heart again. Yet even as she vows to uncover his secrets, Agatha's world is ripped apart and the scandal that follows damages more than just her tenuous place in society. It threatens to shred Oscar's family apart.

A regency historical romance novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Series 22 Feb. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Third Book in the series - Chills (1st) Broken (2nd). Enjoyed the series, particularly liked 'Broken', throughout the three books you have suspense, sacrifice, sadness, love, passion and hatred - what more could you ask for! Past characters are mentioned in each book so its nice to hear how everyone is getting on! Thanks to my Kindle I could read the books one after another without waiting. All three books have very different storylines so was eager to read the next book after I finished the current book. Am already reading more from this author and will continue to look out for more of her work.

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging third book to the series 11 May 2012

I read the first two books in this series and was keen to read this one. The characters are handled well though there are occasional actions that seem unlikely given the era. There is enough story to keep your interest, but there are strands which I would have liked to see develop. This story also brings the Duke of Staines into play and unless you have read at least one of the Hunt Club series you would be adrift with some of the innuendo. In all a good read and I am looking forward to the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars great until the dissapointing ending 3 Feb. 2012

I loved Oscar and Agatha together. I liked that they already had a history and you can tell right away that they truly cared for one another. I liked how half way through the book or so Oscar came to his senses and I looked forward to him and Agatha facing scandal together. This couple brought forth a lot of emotions from me and I adore them and their attitude to be together no matter what! Out of the three books, for sure Oscar and Agatha are my favorite couple.

I also liked his mother's love triangle. The kids from the orphanage were a delight!

(Possible spoiler) Then towards the end, a kidnapping occurs and it disappointed me. I dont think it was necessary, even for Oscar's sake to get over his past. Like the book before this, it became very soap-opera-ish and not to mention the scandal with the rector. But I must say I love the relationship between the duke and Redding!

The first 3/4 of the book were 5 star worthy but must knock out a star for the disappointing and not to mention swift ending. And I dont know if I'll read Randall's story next when it comes out...

Overall though, glad I read this series. Its unusual to find a series with such depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical regency 16 April 2012

For one thing, when the story begins, Oscar and Agatha have already become intimately involved, both aware that it could go nowhere. To be honest, I didn't like Oscar much until the last section of the book where he finally got a backbone and took control of his life. A betrothed hero trying to persuade his true love to become his mistress isn't my favorite scenario in a romance novel.

There are extenuating circumstances, however, and as conscious of his social status as Oscar is, his betrothal was contrived by his fiancée's brother-in-law, who seems extraordinarily possessive. Oscar discovers that he has been deceived about many things in his life, and that there are much worse things than becoming embroiled in scandal.

While the hero didn't thrill me at first, the hints of mysteries and scandals did keep me turning the pages. There is a secondary romance here, between the hero's mother--who has a lover of her own--and a vicar who seems to have played a significant part in her past. Besides the exceedingly odd relationships between the family of Oscar's betrothed--and I would like to have seen that played out a bit more--there is a mysterious gentleman who claims that his relations--a prominent ducal family--have kidnapped or murdered his siblings and could be after him as well. (Since this mystery is never resolved, I'm persuaded that this story will appear in a future novel.)

Agatha is a sympathetic character and a likable heroine. There are times when I wanted to slap her for being so willing to succumb to Oscar's advances--and even inviting them herself--but that makes her human. She's devoted to the welfare of seven children in a nearby orphanage, who manage to teach Oscar a lot about love and what is really important in life.

The protagonists of Broken (The Distinguished Rogues ~ Book 2) play a significant part in this couple's relationship, leaving me so intrigued that I went on to read their story, no matter that it was out of order. I actually enjoyed that one even more! There are brief references to Chills (The Distinguished Rogues ~ Book 1), which I enjoyed last summer.

Ms. Boyd will remain on my list of favorite authors.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I adore these characters! 31 Mar. 2012

I was hesitant when I started this since it is the third in the series but it was a fantastic novel that can stand alone. The storyline is one that I would love to see a sequel to and see if the scandal of Oscar and Aggie follow them throughout their marriage. I would highly recommend getting and reading this book.
4.0 out of 5 stars An ok ending to series but not wonderful 7 May 2014

I read all three books in the distinguished rogues series. The first one Chills was ok, the second one Broken fantastic and this third one was enjoyable but not great. Oscar is like so many titled gentlemen of the ton and is expected to marry well not for love. However the woman he is betrothed to is cold and remote and he desperately doesn't want to marry her but must do his duty. Agatha has lived next door to Oscar for many years with her wealthy Grandfather. Oscar is in love with her but her bloodlines don't meet his criteria for a noble wife. I must admit Oscar treats Agatha pretty badly and I am surprised she comes back for more even when he tells her she is only good enough to be his mistress! There is also another story around Oscars mother which helps to keep this book interesting. If you have read the other two books read this one and if you haven't read the others you can still read this as it's a stand alone book.

I genuinely love this book I re-read it just for the pleasure of it. I can't believe society shun them out,but none the less it worked out for them.
