Book Description

"Jess is dead, and it's my fault."

Anna Macbeth has spent her whole life trying to escape from her past. She left the rural Yorkshire village where she grew up for life as a family lawyer in London, but what secrets did she take with her?

When a familiar voice telephones her with tragic news, Anna knows that running away is no longer an option, and that she has to return to face her demons.

What led Anna to flee from her home, and what is it that causes her to return?

"Charcoal" unfolds a dramatic sequence of events that demonstrate the consequences of desires.

More About the Author

J.E.Rowney spent several years in the cold Yorkshire hills, which brings the flavour of the moorland countryside into her work. She now lives in Dorset, and the sun and sea are slowly creeping in as influences.

She is an award winning poet, and also enjoys writing short stories. "Charcoal", her first novel, was published in 2012 to wide critical acclaim, and was a bestselling novel on Amazon within days of release.

She has since written two bestselling poetry collections, "Desire Lines" and "How the Heart Behaves". A new poetry collection "The Kind of Love They Write Poems About" and a second novel, "Derelict" will be available soon.

She spends lots of time writing in coffee shops, so if you see her, say hello. Bring latte.

Ms. Rowney says: "I always dreamed of being a writer, until I realised that I was. Then I started to write."

4.0 out of 5 stars "Charcoal" by Jayne Rowney 24 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Jayne Rowney's "Charcoal" is a dramatic story about how one bad decision can affect one's entire existence and those closest to them. The plot is easy to follow and easy to relate too. It is something that could and I am sure has, happened before. The imagery is a beautiful sight for the mind's eye. While the characters are written as though, they could be someone from your life. The author brought drama and passion to the story with her flowing words.
I enjoyed reading Jayne Rowney's "Charcoal". I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good writing and a good drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read on a girls weekend 21 Sept. 2013
By Anon
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Brilliant read, really enjoyed it. Characters were very well thought through and the detail given to the girls friendship in the early years was very moving. I would definitely recommend it. I read it in a weekend starting with a glass of wine on a long train journey and it set the scene well. An excellent back drop for a weekend with friends of 20 years! Thank you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 10 Oct. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
After the glowing reviews on here I was really looking forward to reading this, but found it very disappointing. The characters become predictable as quickly as the plot does. It seems to rely on shock & taboo rather than than storyline, and reduces the value of even this by its twee references and poorly written "erotic" moments - somewhat reminiscent of Alan Titchmarsh's attempts at erotic writing. Ironically, its story about mistakes, and indeed it was.

I had to go away for a 3 days and thought I would give this book a try. So glad I did. Got so engrossed in the story and characters that I finished the book well before I had to come home. Can't wait for J.E. Rowney's next novel!

5.0 out of 5 stars A story about the consequences of mistakes 1 Dec. 2012
By Sarah C
Format:Kindle Edition
This story follows Anna as she heads home after her best friends death, charting the selfish mistakes that she made in the past which led to this. A complex & emotional story of love, betrayal & guilt and how the choices we make have consequences that we never could have guessed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tragic tale 6 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a tragic story of the rippling damage abuse can cause and the heartbreak of infertility. When the two combine in Charcoal, the reader is compelled to keep reading long past lights out.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little bit depressing 31 Oct. 2014
By katm
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am ambivalent about Charcoal. The characters and the plot are generally plausible and the story did hold my attention. If anything, it's all a bit too real. If you are feeling depressed, or if you nurse regrets or guilt over past mistakes, this book will make you feel terrible! It's not a heart-warming tale of friendship, more a bleak morality tale, where mistakes lead to the worst possible outcomes.
